The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is finally here, giving Marvel fans a preview of the next film. As expected, it’s full of details to analyze, including how Peter Parker interacts with established MCU characters like Bruce Banner and Frank Castle. While the trailer reveals a lot about the story – especially Peter’s emotional struggles – much of the movie remains a mystery. Marvel is known for keeping details secret during promotion, so some fans were surprised to see the trailer potentially reveal major plot points from the upcoming second season of Daredevil: Born Again.
The trailer shows Spider-Man getting the Key to the City, an honor usually given by the mayor. Since Wilson Fisk is currently the mayor of New York in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he’s actively fighting against superheroes, it seems strange he’d reward Spider-Man. This has led some fans to speculate that the trailer accidentally revealed a major plot point from the upcoming season of Daredevil: Born Again – that Fisk and Spider-Man somehow reconcile. However, this might not be what’s happening.
Did The Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer Spoil Daredevil: Born Again Season 2?

It’s understandable why fans worried the Brand New Day trailer revealed too much about Daredevil: Born Again. The first season ended with Matt Murdock building a team to reclaim New York from Wilson Fisk, hinting at a major showdown. Seeing New York honor a masked hero in the Brand New Day trailer seemed to suggest Murdock won that fight. However, it’s crucial to remember that trailers often present scenes without full context, so we don’t yet know how that celebratory moment fits into the story of Brand New Day.
Okay, so we now know Brand New Day jumps ahead four years after the events of No Way Home, placing the new story in 2028. And honestly, it makes a lot of sense. There’s been a lot of buzz about a huge number of villains showing up, and I’m betting we’re going to see a montage – think a quick rundown of everything Spider-Man’s been up to in those missing years, kind of like that sequence in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. It’s a smart way to fill in the gaps and get us up to speed before launching into this new chapter of Spider-Man’s life. It’ll efficiently establish where he is now and set the stage for whatever Brand New Day has in store for him.
Considering this, Spider-Man likely received the Key to the City before Wilson Fisk became mayor. Since Fisk was elected in 2026, the filmmakers have a two-year period to work with. The Key to the City ceremony could be shown during a montage of Spider-Man fighting less dangerous villains, emphasizing the public’s adoration of him while also highlighting Peter Parker’s personal loneliness.
It’s not uncommon for Marvel’s movies and TV shows to have inconsistencies. For example, the recent Thunderbolts movie didn’t acknowledge Mayor Fisk, despite a major scene taking place in his city, New York. Each Marvel project has to strike a balance – it needs to fit into the overall story, but also work as a standalone experience. Not everyone will have seen every Marvel show, like Daredevil: Born Again, so the connection between different projects shouldn’t be overly reliant on prior knowledge. However, Mayor Fisk is a significant character, and his omission from Thunderbolts felt like a noticeable oversight. There’s likely a reason for this disconnect, and it will probably be addressed later.
