The upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to conclude the Multiverse Saga, but many Marvel fans believe it will significantly change the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Excitement is already building for Avengers: Doomsday, set to release in December 2026, which will feature heroes from different universes. This is all leading up to the grand finale of Avengers: Secret Wars before the franchise moves on to what’s expected to be its next big story: the Mutant Saga.
Fans on Reddit are buzzing with theories about how Secret Wars will impact the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and many believe the movie will essentially restart the franchise. Interestingly, their reasoning centers around Doctor Doom – who we haven’t seen yet – and the surprising casting of Robert Downey Jr. in the role. Several users point to Downey Jr.’s age, suggesting he won’t play the villain long-term, and that the film will instead pave the way for a fresh start with new actors taking on familiar roles.
Why Fans’ Reset Theory Makes Perfect Sense For The MCU

Okay, so everyone’s been talking about a big shake-up for the MCU, and honestly, it’s starting to make a lot of sense to me. A lot of us have been frustrated with certain things, and a reset – maybe through the Multiverse – could fix a lot of those issues. Imagine seeing some of our favorite heroes who are gone return, or even younger takes on classic villains like Doctor Doom – some fans think Robert Downey Jr. is a bit too old for the role now, and a Multiverse reboot could solve that! It’s a pretty exciting idea, and I can see why so many of us are starting to believe it’s actually going to happen.
A complete overhaul of the MCU might seem like an overreaction if it only changes a few characters. However, when you consider the main criticisms of the Multiverse Saga so far, the idea becomes more appealing. While the Multiverse has allowed for a lot of fan-pleasing moments, it’s come at the expense of a cohesive story. Introducing so many character variations and alternate realities diminishes the impact of events and isn’t a good strategy for the franchise’s future.
Casting Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom is a great illustration of how the Multiverse Saga can give fans one last big treat before everything is rebooted. While Downey Jr. is famous for playing Iron Man, seeing him as a significant villain again would definitely grab attention. However, a return beyond this saga seems unlikely. Considering the possibility of a reboot, this casting makes a lot of sense, as it could be the best way for the MCU to regain the excitement of its audience for the next chapter of stories.
