Marvel favourite Kathryn Hahn confirms fan-casting dream as she takes on beloved Disney villain role in live-action

Kathryn Hahn, known for her roles in Marvel projects, will play Mother Gothel in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Tangled.

The American actress began her work with Marvel in 2018, providing the voice for Olivia Octavius, also known as Doctor Octopus, in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Three years after that, she played Agatha Harkness in the Disney+ series WandaVision, and reprised the role in the 2024 spin-off, Agatha All Along. This performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

Everyone expected Kathryn to be cast in Tangled, and she recently confirmed the rumours in a fun way. She posted a video on Instagram showing off her outfit, and she was wearing a t-shirt featuring the character Mother Gothel!

She’s updated her Instagram bio to read “mother knows best.” Interestingly, her username has always been “motherhahn.”

Scarlett Johansson, known for her role as Black Widow, was a potential candidate for the part back in October 2025, when the movie project started up again after being paused for a while.

Unfortunately, the actor had to withdraw from the project because of scheduling issues with his commitments to both The Batman: Part II and the new Exorcist movie.

The cast also includes Teagan Croft, known for her role in Titans, playing Rapunzel, and Milo Manheim, a star from Disney Channel, as Flynn Rider.

The animated movie Tangled came out 16 years ago, in 2010, and rapidly became a big hit for Disney in the 21st century.

This latest film is part of a continuing trend of live-action remakes, following popular movies like The Little Mermaid, Snow White, and the recent hit Lilo & Stitch, which earned over $1 billion worldwide.

Later this year, Disney will also give the same enhanced treatment to Moana. Dwayne Johnson will return as the voice of Maui, and Catherine Laga’aia will once again play Moana.

Michael Gracey, the director of The Greatest Showman, is set to direct a new Tangled movie. The script is currently being written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for her work on Do Revenge and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Kristin Burr will produce through Burr! Productions, and Lucy Kitada will serve as executive producer.

A release date has not yet been scheduled for the film, but it is expected sometime in 2027.
