Robert Downey Jr.’s role as Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday is significant, going beyond just bringing a famous face to the screen. Marvel Studios announced his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2024, years after his character, Tony Stark, died in Avengers: Endgame. Rather than bringing Iron Man back to life, Downey Jr. will play the villain Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, which is set to be the epic conclusion to the Multiverse Saga.
It’s true that many fans initially questioned the decision to bring Robert Downey Jr. back. While his return is exciting, some worried it would hold back the Marvel Cinematic Universe from truly moving past the Infinity Saga, suggesting the studio was prioritizing familiar faces over fresh storylines. However, Kevin Feige and the Russo brothers have hinted that Downey Jr.’s performance will be key, even setting up his role as Doctor Doom. Now, after the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday was shown at CinemaCon 2026, it’s clear why his involvement is so important to the film.
RDJ’s Performance Is Perfect For Doctor Doom’s Avengers: Doomsday Look

Doctor Doom’s appearance in the new movie will closely match his classic comic book look, featuring his signature green suit and metal mask. This presents a challenge for the actor, as the mask hides most of his face and makes it difficult to show emotion – a problem Marvel previously solved with Iron Man by frequently showing Robert Downey Jr.’s face inside the helmet. However, they aren’t doing that with Doctor Doom. Instead, they’re counting on the actor’s expressive eyes to convey the character’s feelings, as those will be the only visible part of his face.
Throughout Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga, his eyes often conveyed crucial emotions. Moments like his sadness over his strained relationship with his father in Iron Man 2, his remorse over Ultron and JARVIS’s fate in Avengers: Age of Ultron, his frustration with Steve Rogers in Captain America: Civil War, and his internal struggle with time travel in Avengers: Endgame were powerfully communicated through his expressions. This makes Doctor Doom, even with most of his face hidden, a character who could similarly convey a wide range of complex feelings – including all those experienced by Tony Stark – through just his eyes, depending on how he’s portrayed in Avengers: Doomsday.
Marvel will likely show Doctor Doom both with and without his mask, but he’ll probably be wearing it most of the time. That’s why casting Robert Downey Jr. in a future Avengers film is so significant – it’s more than just a nostalgic move to bring back a familiar face.
