The Marvel Universe has seen major changes with its most powerful magic user. After Doctor Strange helped defeat a major threat, Doctor Doom briefly became the Sorcerer Supreme and used that power to conquer the world. But Doom’s rule is ending, and Marvel has announced a surprising new Sorcerer Supreme: Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch. This marks a significant development for the often-troubled character, and her new journey begins in a comic series launching in December.
Written by Steve Orlando and illustrated by Bernard Chang, Sorcerer Supreme will center on Wanda Maximoff’s journey as Earth’s main magical protector. However, taking on this role won’t be simple. Marvel describes the story as a bold new direction for Scarlet Witch, challenging expectations and breaking established rules. The question is whether her unconventional approach will elevate magic in the Marvel Universe or lead to its downfall. The Vishanti, disagreeing with Wanda’s claim to the title, choose Agatha Harkness as their own Sorcerer Supreme! After a fierce confrontation with her former teacher, Wanda finds herself trapped in Limbo, a deceptive realm. To escape, she must defeat its ruler, Madelyne Pryor! Meanwhile, with Wanda and the Vishanti preoccupied, dangerous mystical threats are emerging unnoticed. Driven to succeed in her new role, Wanda will push the boundaries of her powers and redefine what it means to be Sorcerer Supreme.
The comic series will introduce a redesigned costume for Wanda, created by artist Russell Dauterman. Dauterman will also create alternate cover art for the first five issues, each highlighting a member of Wanda’s magical advisors, like Clea, Chthon, and Wiccan.
Wanda As Sorcerer Supreme Marks a New (and Well-Earned) Direction for the Scarlet Witch

It feels natural that Wanda is taking on the role of Sorcerer Supreme. She’s incredibly powerful, and her journey shows how much she’s developed. Wanda started with immense but uncontrolled power, but she’s become much more focused and skilled, mastering magic on a huge level. She clearly has the ability and the control to excel in this position.
According to writer Al Ewing, with the Scarlet Witch, anything can happen. This idea guides both the character and the creative team. After the events of ‘One World Under Doom,’ they began to consider who would become the next Sorcerer Supreme. The real question wasn’t just who could wield the artifacts of the Sorcerer Supreme, but who could sense them calling out from the brink of annihilation? In the Marvel Universe, Wanda Maximoff is uniquely attuned to such desperate pleas – she’s the one who hears when no one else does!
I’m really excited for readers to see Wanda embrace her new role and challenge the established magical order – all with the goal of helping everyone. Plus, working with the amazing artist Bernard Chang and colorist Ruth Redmond has been a dream; they’re bringing a fantastic new level of energy and visual style to Wanda’s story!
Wanda May Be A Solid Choice for Sorcerer Supreme, But It Could Also Come With Huge Risk

Wanda is a strong contender to become the next Sorcerer Supreme – she’s clearly skilled in magic and has grown a lot as both a person and a magic user. However, becoming Sorcerer Supreme significantly increases one’s power, and as Doctor Doom demonstrated, that much power can be dangerous. Doom was able to manipulate time and reality, and since Wanda is already naturally more powerful than he was, it’s hard to predict just how strong she’ll become as Sorcerer Supreme – or how that power might affect her.
Wanda’s controversial reputation stems largely from the ‘House of M’ storyline, where she lost control and dramatically altered reality with disastrous consequences. While she’s developed a lot since then, the potential for her powers to spiral out of control still exists. This makes the idea of her becoming Sorcerer Supreme both incredibly interesting and frightening, promising a thrilling new series.
You can now pre-order Sorcerer Supreme #1, which will be released on December 31st, with issue #2 coming out on January 28th. Marvel readers interested in learning more about Wanda’s current situation should also look for One World Under Doom #9, available November 21st.
