Haluk Mentes, head of Marvel Games, sees Marvel’s Wolverine as a logical continuation of their strong working relationship with Insomniac. In a recent Game Informer interview, he explained that they seek out developers who can create versions of characters that feel both recognizable and fresh. He emphasized that consistent creative vision is key to building lasting partnerships within the Marvel Games universe.
Mentes believes Insomniac’s successful history with Spider-Man games, built over more than ten years of collaboration, makes them the perfect studio to develop the first major, high-budget Wolverine game for the PS5, which is expected to release in 2026.
He explains their approach is rooted in trust and genuine creativity, but not strict imitation. Teams are given the freedom to reimagine Marvel heroes, adding their own unique style, while still maintaining the essential feel of the Marvel universe.
Instead of starting from scratch, the development of Wolverine built upon the experience gained from previous Spider-Man games. The team leveraged established workflows, a familiar sense of pacing, and guidelines for maintaining a believable Marvel atmosphere, even while exploring a new style of gameplay.
Ultimately, improvements to how things are made are just as important as the amount of content produced. The efficient techniques used to create exciting action scenes can also help build a more immersive and impactful world for the X-Men.
We’re always looking for partners who share our vision. Like many times before, when we collaborate on a project, those partners become a core part of the ‘Marvel’ family. A great example of this is Marvel’s Wolverine, which we’re making with our friends at Insomniac Games,” Mentes explained.
After working together on several Marvel’s Spider-Man games for over ten years, we’ve built a strong understanding of each other. So, when it was time to bring Logan back in a big way, it was clear to everyone that Insomniac Games was the right partner. We share similar work ethics and goals, and we’re excited to continue working together in the future.
Marvel’s Wolverine really showcases what Insomniac Games does best – delivering engaging combat, focusing on compelling characters, and using incredibly expressive animation. However, it also stands apart from their Spider-Man games with its own unique feel, slower pace, and more intense violence.
Ultimately, it makes sense to let the studio that understands Marvel Games’ vision handle the Wolverine project. Now, it’s up to Insomniac to shift from the smooth style of Spider-Man to a more brutal and powerful approach.
