Marvel Has Completely Forgotten Emma Frost’s Third Mutant Power

The X-Men comics are known for showcasing some of Marvel’s strongest female heroes – and Emma Frost is definitely one of the best. She started as a villain, the White Queen, and played a significant part in the famous “Dark Phoenix Saga.” Over time, she’s become a complex and vital member of the X-Men, recognized as one of Marvel’s most powerful psychic characters. But her abilities turned out to be even more impressive than anyone initially thought.

The comic series New X-Men significantly reshaped the X-Men universe, and Emma Frost was a key part of that change. Writer Grant Morrison introduced the concept of “secondary mutations,” starting with Emma. Morrison intended to feature Colossus, but after he was killed off while curing the Legacy Virus, Emma received a new ability: the power to turn her skin into diamond and gain incredible strength. Already a formidable villain, this transformation made the White Queen even more powerful. However, in 2006, she gained a third power that has largely been overlooked.

Emma Frost’s Third Power Made Her a More “Realistic” Psychic

2006 was a pivotal year for the X-Men. The fallout from the previous year’s House of M event had decimated the mutant population, leaving the X-Mansion as a kind of refuge for the few who remained, ironically overseen by the Sentinels. Cyclops and Emma Frost led the drastically reduced mutant community. Meanwhile, Wolverine’s past came into sharper focus as he recovered his memories after House of M, leading to a new comic series, Wolverine Origins, which explored his history with a dangerous supersoldier named Nuke and a potentially deadly blade called the Murasama.

Issues #3 and #4 of Wolverine Origins teamed up Nuke and Captain America. Notably, in issue #4, Emma Frost had a dream that showed her the future, which guided Wolverine on his journey. This is a surprising development for the character. While Marvel telepaths are known for incredible mental abilities, seeing the future isn’t typically one of them. Usually, “psychic” in comics simply means someone with mental powers, but writer Daniel Way appears to have intentionally blended that with the traditional idea of a psychic—someone who can foresee the future—and used Emma Frost to do so.

While the Wolverine Origins storyline had some success, Emma Frost’s new ability didn’t resonate with readers. This is largely because the audiences for Wolverine comics and X-Men comics are surprisingly separate. Many X-Men fans don’t follow Wolverine’s individual adventures and often feel frustrated that he’s so popular while lesser-known characters they enjoy are forgotten. As a result, it’s likely that many Emma Frost fans weren’t even aware she had been given this power.

As a longtime Emma Frost fan, it’s always exciting to remember all the things she can do! I was reading the old Generation X comics and totally forgot about “psionic lightning” – she could actually weaponize the electrical energy in people’s brains, even causing lightning to strike during a storm! It’s cool how her powers have evolved over the years, but sometimes these awesome abilities get lost in the shuffle. I’d love to see psionic lightning make a comeback, and honestly, I’m always hoping to see more of the precognitive Emma we used to know. Fingers crossed we get another chance to see that side of her!
