The X-Men are the most famous mutant team in Marvel Comics, often representing all mutant heroes. But they aren’t the only ones! The Marvel Universe features several other teams of mutants, including groups that started as X-Men offshoots and completely independent rivals. Beyond villainous groups like the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, many mutant teams are dedicated to heroism. These teams vary widely, from young heroes trying to make a name for themselves to specialized counter-terrorism units, and even one focused solely on gaining popularity.
As a huge X-Men fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the other mutant groups in Marvel Comics. Beyond the main X-Men team, there’s a ton of interesting squads – some officially sanctioned, others formed in opposition to Professor X’s ideas. I’ve put together a list of what I think are the very best of those non-X-Men mutant teams!
10) Morlocks
The Morlocks weren’t so much a team as a group of mutants who formed a community. They played a key role in one of Marvel’s most tragic mutant stories. Living in tunnels beneath New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, these mutants were often unable to blend into society and relied on secrecy for protection. Sadly, they were nearly wiped out in the ‘Mutant Massacre’ when Mister Sinister unleashed his Marauders upon them. Only a handful survived, including Caliban and Callisto.
9) X-Statix
X-Statix was a somewhat infamous mutant team, not really known for being traditional heroes. After the X-Force seemingly died saving the world, businessman Spike Freeman thought he could create a successful, government-sponsored team, managed by the mutant called Coach. In a shocking move, Coach and the mutant Zeitgeist intentionally let their original team members perish, believing the tragedy would boost popularity. When the original X-Force returned, they clashed with X-Statix over the name, leading to a change from X-Force. While they didn’t accomplish much of note, X-Statix was certainly an unusual group.
8) Exiles
The Exiles are a special team of heroes, not just mutants from the main Marvel universe (Earth-616). They’re a multiversal group, meaning its members come from many different realities. A mysterious organization called the Timebreakers gathered these champions from across the multiverse to protect everything that exists. The original team included mutants like Blink (from the Age of Apocalypse), Mimic (from Earth-12), Nocturne (from Earth-2182), T-Bird (from Earth-1100), Morph (from Earth-1081), and Magnus (from Earth-27). Later, they teamed up with other heroes like Captain America from another reality (Earth-86315) and Iron Lad, and together they faced numerous challenges, always striving to safeguard the multiverse.
7) Generation X
Generation X was a group of teenage mutants trained by Emma Frost and Banshee. Initially, Jubilee was the most well-known member, and she was joined by Husk, Synch, M. Chamber, Skin, and Penance. Similar to the New Mutants at the Xavier Institute, Emma and Banshee acted as both teachers and power trainers for the teens. The team lasted for seven years before disbanding after Synch’s death and the revelation that Emma Frost had committed a murder – she had killed her sister, Adrienne, who had become the White Queen.
6) Excalibur
Excalibur is a team of mutants funded by the government, dedicated to protecting people in the United Kingdom. While primarily composed of mutants, Captain Britain frequently joins their ranks. Originally formed to continue Professor X’s work after his apparent death, the team was later revived during the Krakoa era. Over the years, Excalibur has included many well-known X-Men such as Kate Pryde, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee, and Rachel Summers. As the U.K.’s premier superteam, they are still considered a highly regarded group of mutant heroes.
5) Hellions
The Hellions first appeared in Marvel as rivals to the New Mutants, stemming from a conflict between Emma Frost and Xavier’s schools. Initially portrayed as teenage villains, they were simply students following Emma Frost’s opposing teachings. A tragic event where most of the original Hellions died served as a turning point for Emma Frost’s character. The team was later revived on Krakoa, becoming a much stronger and more effective group. This new version of the Hellions was led by Havoc and included powerful members like Psylocke, Empath, Orphan-Maker, Wild Child, and Greycrow, ultimately becoming one of the most successful teams formed during the Krakoa era.
4) New Mutants
When Marvel Comics decided to create a new group of teenage mutants after the original X-Men, they launched The New Mutants. Professor Xavier formed the team as a safe haven for young mutants, providing them with education and guidance in controlling their abilities. Several notable heroes got their start with the New Mutants, including Magik, who later became a prominent X-Men member. Sunspot eventually led an Avengers team, and Cannonball played a key role in X-Force. Interestingly, even Douglas Ramsay, who wasn’t considered a particularly powerful mutant on the team, now headlines his own major crossover series, Age of Revelation. The New Mutants disbanded and eventually evolved into X-Force, but the original team has since reunited.
3) Marauders
As a longtime X-Men fan, I have to say the Marauders are a blast – but we’re really talking about the *second* version of the team. The original Marauders were straight-up villains, responsible for the horrific Mutant Massacre. However, the team that really clicked for me was the Krakoa-era lineup. Kate Pryde assembled a crew that felt like mutant pirates, sailing from the island nation to places like Madripoor and even out into space! With Emma Frost representing the Hellfire Trading Company and a roster packed with heroes like Iceman, Psylocke, Pyro, Bishop, and Storm, it was a truly exciting, swashbuckling take on the mutant adventure we all love.
2) X-Factor
The X-Factor team has evolved a lot over the years, but it’s always featured well-known Marvel mutants. It began with the original X-Men – Cyclops, Angel, Iceman, Beast, and Jean Grey – who initially tried to help mutants by working with the government. A second version, overseen by Val Cooper, included characters like Wolfsbane, Polaris, and Quicksilver, also under government control. Later, Multiple Man led the team as a detective agency, and this continued on the island of Krakoa with Northstar in charge. This latest version of X-Factor, featuring members like Daken and Prodigy, focused on solving crimes within the mutant nation.
1) X-Force
X-Force is the most well-known team to spin out of the X-Men. It began when Cable decided to transform the New Mutants into something far more intense. Instead of being young heroes striving for Xavier’s vision, they became a lethal counter-terrorism squad dedicated to preventing future dangers, even if it meant using extreme methods. As some original members left, Cable recruited new faces like Domino and Boom Boom, along with Warpath, Shatterstar, and Feral. He even teamed up with Deadpool, despite an initial attempt on his life. Over time, X-Force evolved into the X-Men’s covert operations team, handling missions the X-Men couldn’t, and now boasts prominent members including Wolverine, Psylocke, Bishop, X-23, and others.
