Marvel Is Breaking an MCU TV Record in 2025, and It Contradicts a Disney Promise

2025 has been a bustling year for Marvel Television, with the latest trailer for “Marvel Zombies” adding to the excitement. This division of Marvel Studios has been consistently producing both live-action and animated shows for Disney+ in 2025. Alongside “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” “Daredevil: Born Again,” “Ironheart,” “Eyes of Wakanda,” and upcoming series like “Marvel Zombies” and “Wonder Man,” a total of six seasons of Marvel television will grace the Disney+ platform in 2025.

Among all Marvel TV series launched on Disney+ in a single year, that one has the highest episode count. Interestingly, this stands in contrast to Disney’s recent commitment to lower the annual production of Marvel TV shows.

Why Is 2025 Crammed With Marvel Television Shows?

In light of Marvel’s financial troubles in 2023, caused by films such as “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Secret Invasion”, Marvel Studios and Disney leadership decided to reduce the number of Marvel Cinematic Universe projects released annually. Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, reportedly felt that the increasing number of MCU productions were more akin to schoolwork than enjoyable viewing experiences. Therefore, the decision was made to scale back the release schedule to two or three movies per year and just a few TV shows annually.

It’s quite surprising to learn that Marvel Television will release six new seasons of television shows in 2025, considering these discussions about them have been ongoing for almost two years. Regrettably, it seems like Marvel is trying to clear out its backlogged TV series this year before transitioning to a more limited number of annual releases. The older animated shows such as Spider-Man and Marvel Zombies can be seen as remnants of the early 2020s, a time when Marvel was heavily invested in producing animated content inspired by What If…? and Disney’s insatiable appetite for streaming content.

As a die-hard Marvel fan, it’s no secret that I was disappointed when Marvel had to trim down their lineup. In the first place, series based in alternate realities, especially those not linked to the ’97 X-Men, were among the first to be axed. Moreover, shows like Marvel Zombies, which seemed to reel in big-screen heroes for TV, didn’t stand a chance either.

Fast forward, and it appears that even shows within the canon, such as Eyes of Wakanda, are being phased out throughout 2025 with minimal fanfare. These shows, despite their connections to the Marvel universe, seem to be getting a hurried send-off without much advanced buzz.

Absolutely, 2025 will offer six new seasons of Marvel content on our screens. Contrary to 2021, when multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe shows debuted with a massive marketing campaign, the release strategy for 2025 is more subtle. Most of these MCU productions will be introduced quietly onto Disney+ with little pomp and circumstance, in part to avoid creating excessive expectations about future releases.

Delays Informed Marvel’s Crowded 2025 Slate

Delays in multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects have led to a congested lineup of Marvel TV shows in 2025. Instead of Marvel and Disney breaking their word about reducing Marvel Television’s productions, the overflow of Marvel/Disney+ content in 2025 is due to certain shows sitting on hold for too long. For example, “Ironheart,” initially planned for summer 2022, was pushed back by three full years before its debut. In contrast, filming for “Wonder Man” started in April 2023 but won’t air until December 2025, almost three years after the cameras began rolling.

The local hero, Spider-Man, originally had a planned debut in 2024, but delays pushed the release to early 2025. Multiple setbacks led to all these shows premiering this year. Some programs were held back as Marvel was still determining their future strategies. Additionally, production disruptions in 2023 impacted series like Daredevil: Born Again, which was initially slated for 2024. Conversely, Ironheart and Wonder Man’s premieres were a result of Marvel reducing the pace of its live-action TV show productions. While 2022 saw three seasons of new live-action programming, only two new seasons of live-action MCU TV shows appeared on Disney+ in both 2023 and 2024. Spacing out live-action programming prevented Ironheart and Wonder Man from meeting their initial release dates.

2026 seems to be shaping up as a more focused and streamlined year for Marvel content, with only three new series – “Daredevil: Born Again”, “X-Men ’97”, and another season of “Spider-Man” – along with the miniseries “Vision Quest”. This relatively smaller slate for 2026 underlines the fact that 2025 was an exceptional year, as Marvel and Disney have been focusing on a more selective approach in their television programming. However, considering the recent trend towards reducing Marvel streaming shows, it’s quite surprising to see how many MCU TV shows were released in 2025!

All four episodes of Marvel Zombies drop on Disney+ on September 24.
