Marvel Is Finally Giving the Most Important X-Man the Respect He Deserves

The X-Men are a cornerstone of the Marvel Universe, consistently championing equality and hope even when facing overwhelming odds. They’ve endured more hardship than any other superhero group, battling threats ranging from killer robots and genocide to universe-level dangers, all focused on wiping out mutants. Despite this constant struggle, the X-Men fight for a world where mutants can simply exist without having to fight for their right to do so. Throughout their history, Cyclops has consistently been a central leader and driving force within the team.

As a huge cinema devotee, I’ve always thought Cyclops was the heart of the X-Men. He’s basically been their leader since day one, the one everyone looks to when things get tough. Honestly, if you had to pick a main character for the team, it’d be him, no question. It’s always baffled me that he’s often been underestimated by both fans and the people making the movies and comics. He’s gone through so many phases – the straight-laced hero, the rebel, the revolutionary – but now, with this fresh take on the X-Men, it feels like he’s finally getting the recognition he deserves. To me, he’s always been the most important X-Man, and it’s great to see others realizing that too.

What Sets Cyclops Apart

The X-Men are a fascinating group of characters, and despite having a huge number of members, they’re remarkably well-developed. Many fans have a favorite X-Man, and most could easily carry their own comic book series. Currently, Wolverine and Storm are headlining their own books, and many other X-Men are leading or joining various teams. It’s hard to stand out amongst so many iconic heroes, but Cyclops consistently proves to be a standout figure.

Cyclops truly shines when facing difficult situations – he’s incredibly determined and focused. Though some find him rigid and serious, that overlooks his hidden depth. He never asked to be a leader or a teacher, but he stepped up because he felt responsible. This creates a compelling tension between his desire for a normal life and his commitment to protecting mutants. He’s a reluctant leader who’s fully embracing that role again, and it’s a powerful thing to see.

Marvel Is Treating Cyclops Right

The recent ‘From the Ashes’ storyline in X-Men comics feels like a step back and forward at the same time. Some fans believe it undoes the progress the team made during the Krakoa era, but Cyclops has clearly taken the lead in this new direction. He’s formed his own team of X-Men with the goal of helping mutants reconnect with humanity – by protecting everyone and demonstrating that mutants and humans can live together peacefully. He’s essentially using a difficult situation as a chance for mutantkind to evolve and find new purpose.

Recent storylines, particularly with the ‘Shadow of Tomorrow’ banner, have firmly established Cyclops as a central figure connecting the X-Men. While the ‘Age of Revelation’ event wasn’t a huge success overall, it brilliantly demonstrated Cyclops’ leadership abilities. He confidently navigated the future, overcoming obstacles through his strong personality and strategic thinking. Now, back in the present, he’s not only starring in his own comic series that highlights his best qualities, but this return to form also resolves a long-standing weakness in his portrayal.

Cyclops went through a dark period in the early 2010s, becoming so extreme that it was hard to tell if he was fighting for good or simply pursuing his own goals. He was willing to sacrifice anyone to achieve what he believed was the greater good. However, since the fall of Krakoa, he’s started to embrace his earlier, more heroic ideals. While he still leads with a military mindset, he’s now openly stating that the X-Men are heroes for all. It seems Marvel has finally found a balance, allowing Cyclops to be a passionate advocate for mutants while still maintaining his compassion. This version of Cyclops is arguably his strongest, and when he’s at his best, he’s unmatched.
