Marvel Is Taking A Major Spider-Man Risk For Tom Holland’s New Era, But It Will Likely Payoff

Tom Holland’s run as Spider-Man is taking a bold new direction, and early signs suggest it’s paying off. It’s been a decade since his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in Captain America: Civil War. Since then, the hero from Queens has faced incredible challenges – battling Thanos and even meeting versions of himself from other universes. Through everything, Peter Parker has matured from a teenager into a full-fledged adult.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man last appeared in the popular 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home, which concluded the first three movies of his story within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Typically, heroes in the MCU get a three-movie arc, and then their individual storylines wrap up. However, due to Spider-Man’s continued success, Marvel Studios wants to keep making solo films featuring the character. For his next adventure, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, they’re taking a big risk and making a significant change to the formula.

Brand New Day Is The First MCU Spider-Man Film Not Helmed By Jon Watts

Tom Holland will return as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for release in July 2026. This will be his seventh appearance as the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his fourth solo movie. While most of the original cast is returning, a new director will be taking the helm. Jon Watts, who directed Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, is not directing this new film.

Jon Watts played a key role in making the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man films successful. He was passionate about directing Spider-Man: Homecoming and even created his own trailers to convince Marvel Studios of his vision. His take on a younger Spider-Man worked well, which was challenging given the previous, popular but imperfect, films starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. It’s understandable that fans are worried about Watts leaving the series, especially since he directed Tom Holland in his first three Spider-Man movies so well.

Launching a new Spider-Man film series with Brand New Day is a significant gamble. How audiences react will heavily influence the direction of Spider-Man’s story within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Destin Daniel Cretton’s MCU Record Has Been Phenomenal & That’s Great For Brand New Day

Although fans will be sad to see him go, Marvel Studios has chosen a skilled director, Destin Daniel Cretton, to take over Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Cretton is already familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having directed the 2021 film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which was highly praised – earning a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – and is considered one of the best MCU films since the conclusion of the Infinity Saga.

Destin Daniel Cretton is establishing himself as a strong comic book director thanks to the positive reception of Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man. Many consider the Disney+ show to be one of the highlights of the Multiverse Saga so far. With both Shang-Chi and Wonder Man under his belt, Cretton has demonstrated an ability to create large-scale superhero stories that feel both exciting and realistic – a key strength as he moves forward with Peter’s storyline.

With Holland’s Spider-Man starting a new story arc, it’s fitting that Spider-Man: Brand New Day also signals a fresh start for the movie series itself. While change can be unsettling, Marvel Studios seems to have positioned this next phase for Spider-Man for the greatest possible success, with director Destin Daniel Cretton leading the way.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
