The influence of Captain America expands as a new bearer of liberty, the Sentinel of Liberty, emerges. Initially, Steve Rogers was the one who carried the symbolic star-studded shield; however, other heroes such as Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson have taken on the role. Yet, finding someone to match Steve Roger’s legacy has proven challenging for the government. Readers might believe they are familiar with Captain America’s background, but delving into his history could uncover another potential successor to the Captain America title. SPOILER ALERT: The following contains spoilers from Captain America #1.
In the comic series, titled “Captain America” #1, penned by Chip Zdarsky, Valerio Schiti, Frank Martin, and lettered by VC’s Joe Caramagna, the narrative revolves around Steve Rogers and a determined young boy named David Colton. The story begins with David witnessing the 9/11 terrorist attack that led to the collapse of the Twin Towers, an event that stirs within him a desire to serve in the military. Despite his health issues such as asthma and poor vision, and his scrawny build, David remains resolute in his pursuit. His determination catches the attention of someone in authority, granting him a chance to try out for the forces, much like how Steve Rogers was given an opportunity before he was enhanced by the super-soldier serum.
Marvel Reveals a Secret Captain America That Nobody Knew About Until Now
David’s journey mirrors Steve Rogers’ path to some extent. Like Rogers, who was smaller than most army recruits, David is also undersized and faces bullying from his peers and superiors. He receives frequent beatings during training. Meanwhile, Steve Rogers hesitates to accept Iron Man’s invitation to join the Avengers. Instead, he decides to serve in the United States Armed Forces under General Thaddeus Ross, who will later become the Red Hulk, because he feels he needs more time to understand and adapt to this new world he has entered.
In my role as Captain America, I find myself embarking on my initial mission after being thawed from the ice – infiltrating the fortress of Doctor Doom in Latveria to rescue hostage diplomats. With a state-of-the-art stealth suit and my trusty Howling Commandos by my side, I’m ready for action. However, an unexpected last-minute addition leaves me taken aback – a redhead sporting his own red-white-and-blue shield. The evidence suggests this enigmatic figure could be none other than the grown-up David Colton.
Earlier, David ended up in the hospital after a sergeant brutally attacked him outside the barracks, leaving him severely injured. Later, another officer pays David a visit and suggests there might be a cure for his asthma, as well as other health issues he’s experiencing. Given that this implies some kind of super-soldier treatment, we’ll have to wait until the next issue of Captain America to witness David in full patriotic regalia.
It’s puzzling why nobody has come across David Colton’s Captain America until recently, given the ever-changing timeline in Marvel’s narrative. It seems that Steve Rogers is now awakening from suspended animation around the time of the 9/11 attacks, approximately 25 years ago. Despite not meeting the typical physical requirements for military recruitment, David and Steve both embody courage, tenacity, and a strong desire to serve their nations. Could it be that David doesn’t survive his mission in Latveria? Or perhaps he will reappear like Bucky Barnes did as the Winter Soldier, if Captain America believes him to be deceased. Many possibilities are still open for speculation.
