Iron Man is one of Marvel’s most recognizable heroes. He first appeared in 1962 and has been a key figure in Marvel Comics ever since, as an original Avenger and the focus of famous storylines like “Demon in a Bottle,” “Armor Wars,” and “Civil War.” The character became even more popular with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, turning him into a pop culture sensation. Now, Marvel is making a significant change to Iron Man that could transform him into a much darker character.
The major ‘Age of Revelation’ storyline is happening now in Marvel Comics, dramatically changing the future of the X-Men. The story jumps ten years ahead to a world transformed by Doug Ramsey, also known as Revelation, who is following in the footsteps of Apocalypse. This future Earth has been reshaped to match Revelation’s vision, and a dangerous virus called the X-Virus is spreading, turning people into mutants or killing them. The new comic, *Iron & Frost* #1, reveals how Revelation’s forces targeted the Avengers, but the biggest surprise isn’t the attack itself – it’s that Iron Man is gone, replaced by a new hero called Iron King.
Tony Stark is Now the Iron King
Ten years after the Avengers mansion was destroyed and Emma Frost was presumed dead, she returns to New York City. Following a series of clues, she discovers the remains of the mansion hidden underground, now being used as a secret base by a new version of the Hellfire Club. But the biggest shock comes when she searches for Tony Stark and is told he’s no longer the man she knew. It turns out Tony has undergone a dramatic transformation, mutating into a metallic being who now calls himself the Iron King.
We don’t know much about Tony Stark’s current condition, but he’s been trying to find a cure for the X-Virus and it seems he’s been infected himself. His new look shows he’s become fused with his Iron Man suit – it’s not just something he wears anymore. His face and hair are now actually made of metal, not hidden behind a mask. He looks somewhat like Doctor Doom, if Doom were golden and wearing the Iron Man armor.
Is the Iron King a Hero or a Villain?
Emma is stunned by Tony Stark’s transformation into the Iron King, and she’s not the only one. The entire ‘Age of Revelation’ storyline has hinted at big changes for characters and the Marvel Universe, but Tony becoming the Iron King feels particularly ominous. Since opposing this new future is now considered a crime, and the Hellfire Club is known for its villains, Tony’s leadership role – especially with the club operating out of the former Avengers mansion – effectively labels him a criminal, even if it’s due to the circumstances.
It’s not yet certain if Tony Stark has become a villain. The first issue of *Iron & Frost* shows he’s been working on a cure for the X-Virus, which puts him at odds with Revelation – meaning he’s still fighting against those who would oppress others. He’s just approaching the fight differently now, ten years later and after undergoing physical changes. Marvel seems to be building towards a more cynical and darker version of Iron Man, one who is facing overwhelming challenges and adapting his methods accordingly. Based on *Iron & Frost* #1 and other stories in the Age of Revelation, Revelation isn’t a typical enemy. It’s a grim future where many heroes have fallen and the survivors are struggling on their own. Considering the limited resources and seemingly impossible odds, Tony’s transformation might not be about good versus evil, but rather about how far he’s willing to go to save both humanity and mutants.
Iron & Frost #1 is on sale now.
