The Marvel Cinematic Universe has just introduced a truly formidable villain. While some villains are dangerous, like Kingpin, who’s a powerful crime boss and mayor, they aren’t threats to the entire world. Other villains, however, are so powerful they require a team effort to defeat them. This is why the Avengers were created – to unite Earth’s strongest heroes when facing an overwhelming enemy.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t featured a lot of truly major villains for the Avengers, mainly because team-up movies haven’t happened very often. While Loki, Ultron, and Thanos are strong examples, other powerful enemies like Kang the Conqueror and Galactus have been defeated in separate storylines. Galactus, for instance, was only a threat in the Fantastic Four’s universe, where they managed to beat him. It appears the Fantastic Four have also taken down other villains who could challenge the Avengers…
The Fantastic Four Have Also Faced the Super-Adaptoid

Marvel recently released a prelude to the Fantastic Four: First Steps comic, titled The Fantastic Four: First Foes. Written by Dan Slott and Ryan North, with art by Mark Buckingham and Phil Noto, this story expands on the origins of the Fantastic Four. It introduces Professor Rene Rodin, who was Reed Richards’ mentor and a boastful scientist convinced he was the key to Reed’s success. Rodin was present at mission control when the Fantastic Four gained their powers and believed his calculations were what brought them safely back to Earth after being caught in a cosmic storm.
Rodin transformed into the Mad Thinker, a villain from the Fantastic Four comics, first appearing in First Steps. His initial attack involved seizing control of the city’s technology, which drove the Fantastic Four back to their less high-tech headquarters on Yancey Street. He then unleashed the Super-Adaptoid, a powerful android against them. The Super-Adaptoid is a well-known threat, capable of copying any superpowers it encounters, making it a formidable foe on the level of the Avengers. It has previously battled entire teams like the Avengers and X-Men, and proved equally dangerous to the Fantastic Four.
The Super-Adaptoid in Fantastic Four: First Foes isn’t a simple copycat. Instead of duplicating superpowers, it uses advanced technology to identify and specifically counter them. It’s designed to overpower the Thing, break through the Invisible Woman’s force fields with sound, and extinguish the Human Torch’s flames. Despite being a formidable opponent, the Fantastic Four quickly defeat it. While it can negate their powers, it’s no match for Reed Richards’ intelligence, which surpasses even that of the Mad Thinker.
Fans generally expect that the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars movies will merge the main Marvel Cinematic Universe with the timeline of the Fantastic Four. If this happens, the Super-Adaptoid – a villain who learns and copies the powers of others – will likely join this shared universe, becoming an even bigger threat with so many heroes around. It will be exciting to see if this character appears in a live-action movie.
