Spider-Man comics are often at the center of fan arguments. Though he’s Marvel’s most popular character, his comic book storylines frequently spark debate. A lot of the controversy stems from “One More Day,” a storyline that many fans disliked because it erased years of established history, supposedly to make Peter Parker more relatable. While most unpopular changes are eventually forgotten, “One More Day” remains a major point of contention, and many fans are more upset about it now than they were when it first came out – it’s been a source of frustration for almost twenty years.
As much as Spider-Man keeps delivering amazing comics and stories, there’s still a lingering hurt among fans over the “One More Day” storyline – and many feel it can never be truly fixed. But Marvel seems to understand what we’re craving, and they’ve given us something truly special with The Amazing Spider-Man: Torn. This series takes us back to Peter Parker’s college years, and honestly, issue #3 proved this is exactly the kind of Spider-Man story I – and so many others – have been hoping for. It feels like a breath of fresh air and a real return to what makes the character so compelling.
A Return to Classic Spidey Adventures

I’m really hooked on the Torn storyline! It’s been tough watching Spider-Man juggle his feelings for Gwen and MJ, but things got even more complicated with this new villain, Evangeline. She started as a thief trying to steal a really old book, but it ended up possessing her and turning her into a demon! The last issue was wild – Spidey and Evangeline had this huge fight right in the streets. She could somehow sense where the book was – Peter had it with him, which ruined his date with MJ! She almost got it, and then… the book just absorbed her, sending her to who-knows-where. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Peter quietly rejoined MJ and Stacy, who had arrived during the fight. Gwen and her father urged everyone to take Peter to the hospital, and MJ agreed, though she was upset and felt like Peter was drifting away from her towards Gwen. Confused, MJ sought advice from Aunt May. She explained her love for Peter, but how difficult it was due to his tendency to keep people at a distance. Aunt May explained that Peter had trouble accepting help, and that college was a confusing time of self-discovery. She encouraged MJ to trust her feelings and give Peter space to grow.
Back at their apartment, Peter and Harry had an awkward conversation about how badly their love lives were going. Harry knew Peter still had feelings for Gwen, which made it hard for him to connect with her, especially with everything happening with his father. Meanwhile, Peter finally admitted to himself that he’s in love with MJ, even though he still cares about Gwen. He’s always struggled to move on from the past, but he wants to try for the sake of his future with MJ.
Stories Without Complications

Like the recent Batman/Superman: World’s Finest, The Amazing Spider-Man: Torn cleverly revisits Spider-Man’s formative years using contemporary storytelling techniques – and it’s something the character really benefits from. Current Spider-Man comics often feel constrained by heavy editing and complicated continuity, but this one avoids those issues. Most fans agree that Spider-Man’s early adventures are his best, filled with memorable characters and the dramatic, personal stories he’s known for. By setting a story during this period, the comic gives readers the kind of Spider-Man experience they’ve been missing, while also adding new layers to familiar and cherished storylines.
This comic beautifully blends the classic feel of Spider-Man with a fresh approach. It’s a great option for longtime fans who dislike recent storylines, offering a familiar take on the character without any of the frustrating changes. At the same time, it introduces new readers to the evolution of Spider-Man and his world. This comic showcases a rarely explored, more carefree side of Peter Parker, and it’s a welcome addition to the character’s history. Ultimately, it addresses a major issue with current Spider-Man comics, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to all fans.
