The Scarlet Witch recently appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the animated Marvel Zombies series borrowed a strange element from her most debated film. Three years after Wanda Maximoff’s death within the MCU timeline, Elizabeth Olsen reprised her role, voicing a villainous version of the popular character in Marvel Zombies. This alternate version of Wanda initially appeared in What If…? season 1, episode 5, titled “What If… Zombies?!,” but Marvel Zombies showed that even as a zombie, she figured out how to control her abilities, ultimately becoming the Queen of the Dead.
Throughout Marvel Zombies, the Queen of the Dead built a massive zombie army – filled with both superheroes and gods – that might have been powerful enough to overcome the Infinity Hulk. Her goal was to take the Infinity Hulk’s power, which would let her reshape reality and make the world *appear* normal, even though it would still be overrun by zombies. While the Scarlet Witch is incredibly powerful within the MCU, she couldn’t absorb the Infinity Hulk’s power on her own. She needed help from Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), mirroring the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness by linking Maximoff’s success to another young woman.

Following the events in Westview, New Jersey, depicted in WandaVision – where she unintentionally turned an entire town against her – Wanda Maximoff began studying the Darkhold. She hoped to discover a way to be reunited with her sons, Billy and Tommy. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness showed that she mastered the ability to dream-walk, letting her briefly visit alternate realities and spend time with them. But wanting to be with them permanently, she sought out America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), intending to take her power of traveling between universes so she could permanently move to a reality where her sons existed.
It’s strange that Marvel Studios consistently relies on teenagers to help the Scarlet Witch succeed – first with America Chavez and then Kamala Khan. In Marvel Zombies, the Queen of the Dead needed Kamala Khan’s unique ability to create things from light to rebuild the world, but even then, it wasn’t a stable solution, as Kamala was able to see through the Scarlet Witch’s deception. Wanda Maximoff is established as one of the MCU’s strongest characters, a powerful being who can alter reality itself, yet she repeatedly needs assistance from other heroes to accomplish her aims.
While Elizabeth Olsen’s return to the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t been officially confirmed, many believe she will reprise her role as the Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. After the WandaVision spinoffs, Agatha All Along and the forthcoming Vision Quest series, fans are eager to see the Scarlet Witch back in action. Ideally, she’ll return as a powerful, independent hero, as this current trend of Marvel Studios relying too much on team-ups needs to stop.
