Since its launch, The Mortal Thor has consistently been one of Marvel’s strongest titles. Picking up after the events of The Immortal Thor, the series is particularly notable for its deep dive into Norse mythology. Writer Al Ewing expertly weaves these myths into the story, and recently reintroduced Odin, a character who’s been absent for a while. Known as one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe—both in the comics and the films—Odin’s complicated role as ruler of Asgard continues to unfold with his return.
Odin is currently experiencing a phase where he appears to be dead. After being ‘killed,’ he spent time in Valhalla with other honored warriors, enjoying feasts and camaraderie. He’s recently been featured in several comics focused on Asgard, like Al Ewing’s The Immortal Thor, offering wisdom from the afterlife. However, in The Mortal Thor #4, Odin returned to have a conversation with Loki, setting the stage for a confrontation in the latest issue. During this encounter, Odin explains how he was able to leave Valhalla and reveals what appears to be his final, most powerful form.
The All-Father Becomes the Wanderer

Odin, like most of the Norse gods in this version of the Marvel universe, has died and been reborn many times. While there have been various powerful versions of both Odin and Thor, a recent comic issue, The Mortal Thor #5, highlights a key aspect of Odin’s character: he holds himself to the same rules he sets for others. When Loki asks how Odin left Valhalla, Odin explains that he simply walked away. As the creator of Valhalla and its secrets, he chose to break the cycle he’d maintained for thousands of years, knowing there would be consequences.
Leaving Valhalla essentially meant Odin removed himself from the Norse realm. He’s no longer the supreme god, and can never return to that role. He’s now known simply as Odin the Wanderer, which actually gives him a unique advantage. A key point from his conversation with Loki is that Odin was always the most powerful and knowledgeable being in the Norse world. He established all the rules and oversaw everything – he was central to its very existence.
However, Odin has decided to travel the realms, despite his immense power and wisdom. He claims he’s stepping down from the throne and won’t interfere with his children’s lives – though knowing Odin, that’s unlikely to last. Loki suspects his adoptive father is just pretending to disengage. Odin is free to do as he pleases, and it’s certain he’ll continue to influence events concerning his family and realm in the future.
The Mortal Thor #5 is on sale now.
