Marvel Keeps Ignoring Daredevil’s Secret Weapon & It’s Hurting A Great Hero

Daredevil is a compelling Marvel hero because he’s full of fascinating contradictions. Though blind, he perceives the world more acutely than most. He’s a lawyer committed to justice, but at night, he becomes a vigilante, taking the law into his own hands to protect people. Perhaps most strikingly, he’s a deeply religious Catholic who adopts the persona of the Devil to intimidate his enemies. Matt genuinely believes in his faith, but his methods as Daredevil often clash with Catholic teachings – he frequently lies and gives in to anger. This complex and contradictory nature is what makes Daredevil such a compelling character, but Marvel doesn’t often explore this interesting aspect of his personality.

Daredevil’s Catholic faith is rarely explored in depth in his comics, and when it is, the portrayals tend to be repetitive. Marvel should move beyond simply showing Matt Murdock’s beliefs and instead delve into *why* his faith is so important to him. By not fully exploring this aspect of his character, Marvel is missing out on a powerful storytelling opportunity.

Daredevil’s Faith Opens Infinite Doors

Daredevil is unusual among superheroes for how central faith is to his character. While Nightcrawler is also known for being Catholic, he’s often a supporting character, meaning his beliefs aren’t explored as deeply. Other heroes, like Miss Marvel, do have religious backgrounds, but their stories tend to focus on the social aspects of faith rather than the personal, internal struggles that make Daredevil’s portrayal so compelling.

Most superheroes aren’t known for being particularly religious, which makes Daredevil unique. His popularity and faith give Marvel a chance to tell stories they couldn’t with other characters. A story about the complex relationship between choice and destiny would be much more impactful with Daredevil as the lead, compared to someone like Spider-Man. Interestingly, Marvel actually includes a version of the Judeo-Christian God – known as the One Above All – who has communicated with many famous heroes like Spider-Man, Hulk, and the Fantastic Four, but has never spoken to Daredevil.

It’s fascinating to imagine Daredevil grappling with the power of the One Below All, or having meaningful conversations about faith with figures like Thor and Hercules. There’s a wealth of potential in exploring Matt Murdock’s spirituality, yet Marvel often falls back on familiar storylines instead.

Daredevil’s Belief Has to Be Explored

Many of Daredevil’s most compelling stories explore his religious faith. The iconic “Born Again” storyline draws heavily on Christian imagery, particularly the Stations of the Cross, and centers on themes of death and rebirth. More recently, Chip Zdarsky’s critically acclaimed *Daredevil* run prominently featured Matt Murdock grappling with living according to his beliefs. Daredevil often views himself as a warrior for God, using anger he knows he should control to protect others, but constantly questions whether justified violence is truly different from ordinary violence. He’s a deeply faithful man who frequently struggles to align his beliefs with the realities of his life. While these faith-based stories are often exceptional, not all portrayals of this internal conflict are equally effective.

Many Daredevil comics touch on Catholic themes, but often only in a superficial way. A good example is Saladin Ahmed’s run, where Matt Murdock briefly becomes a priest and faces villains representing the seven deadly sins. While this setup could have been a great opportunity to explore Matt’s faith and how it affects his life, especially considering his past mistakes, the story mostly uses religious imagery as a quick way to create conflict and villains without really delving into deeper meaning or Matt’s personal beliefs.

Rather than confronting challenging questions about his faith, Matt simply quotes a Bible verse before battling a monster representing a particular sin – though this connection feels superficial, lacking depth from his established history and personality. The setup had immense potential, but it’s ultimately wasted by only hinting at Daredevil’s beliefs instead of exploring what those beliefs actually mean to him.

Daredevil’s religious faith is a core part of who he is, but it doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. Matt Murdock is a complex character, and exploring his beliefs in depth could lead to much more compelling stories. When his Catholicism is well-integrated into the narrative, it truly enhances his character and allows for powerful storytelling. Ignoring this important aspect risks making it feel like a convenient plot device rather than a meaningful part of who he is.
