Marvel Officially Reveals a New Team of Super Teens (And They’re Not the Young Avengers)

As a lifelong Marvel fan who grew up reading comics and dreaming of joining the ranks of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia with the arrival of the New Champions. Having spent countless hours poring over panels featuring the original Avengers, X-Men, and Spider-Man, it’s heartening to see a new generation of young heroes stepping up to protect our world.

The preview for New Champions #1 has me hooked, with its fast-paced action, engaging dialogue, and intriguing roster of characters. The team dynamics, as showcased in their first battle against the Brothers Grimm, have a refreshing energy that harkens back to my own experiences of reading comics as a kid.

What I find particularly appealing about this new team is that they are still figuring out who they are and what their place in the Marvel Universe will be. It’s reminiscent of the early days of the original Avengers, when they were just a group of ordinary people trying to make a difference. The fact that these heroes have unique abilities and powers only adds to their allure.

One thing I can’t help but appreciate is Moon Squire’s eagerness to get home for dinner with his mom. It’s a relatable moment that helps ground the characters and makes them feel more real. Plus, who doesn’t love a good meal after a long day of saving the world?

Overall, I have high hopes for the New Champions. They’ve got the potential to become fan favorites, much like the original teams before them. And who knows, maybe one day they’ll even team up with the Young Avengers and form an unstoppable force of teenage heroes.

Now if only I could figure out a way to get my hands on that New Champions mobile so I can stop taking the bus… Just kidding! I wouldn’t trade the joy of reading comics for anything in the world!

As fans anticipate the eventual introduction of the Young Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a fresh band of teenage superheroes are creating a stir in the comics. Over the years, Marvel has introduced numerous teams consisting primarily of adolescents, such as the New Warriors, New Mutants, Runaways, Young Avengers, and more recently, Champions. It’s only a matter of time before these young hopefuls step into the limelight. Although the Young Avengers enjoy widespread recognition and have a dedicated fanbase, another team is aiming to establish their own niche in the Marvel Universe. The New Champions have emerged and are swiftly taking down villains.

In a unique sneak peek, New Champions #1, penned by Steve Foxe, illustrated by Ivan Fiorelli, IG Guara, Arthur Hesli, and lettered by VC’s Travis Lanham, is set to captivate readers. The narrative plunges us headfirst into the hustle and bustle of San Francisco, where the New Champions unite to confront The Brothers Grimm. In what seems like an assault from Moon Knight, crescent darts whizz through their midst in the air. Yet, it’s neither Moon Knight nor the Avengers causing the chaos. One of the heroes exclaims, “West Coast, regardless of age.” We are then introduced to four of the new superheroes.

New Champions take down their first supervillains

As a long-time comic book enthusiast with a special fondness for superheroes and their intricate backstories, I found the preview of “New Champions” #1 to be nothing short of exhilarating. The unveiling of the identities and powers of its four members was a thrilling experience, as each character seems to offer something unique and captivating.

Firstly, Moon Squire, reminiscent of Moon Knight in appearance, caught my attention with his ability to absorb light. This immediately sparked curiosity about the depths of his powers and what challenges he may face in the future.

Next up is Liberty, a beacon of hope, who soars through the air with metal wings, much like a modern-day Icarus. Her hard-light constructs suggest she has a strong connection to technology, making her an exciting addition to the team.

Cadet Marvel’s appearance harkens back to Captain Marvel, but it seems this character brings more than just a passing resemblance. The inclusion of jet-powered punches and fuel-injected attitude promises action-packed scenes that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Lastly, Hellrune, with her mystery spear, spells, and potentially Asgardian-related origin, intrigues me most. Her enigmatic background leaves me wondering if she’s a newcomer to the world of superheroes or an ancient being reemerging after centuries in hiding.

All in all, “New Champions” #1 has managed to pique my interest and leave me eagerly anticipating the adventures that await these four extraordinary individuals. The diverse array of abilities and origins showcases the creativity and imagination of the writers and artists involved, making this series a must-read for any comic book fan.

As Liberty reveled in our triumph, Cadet Marvel gently reminded me to keep a low profile around the bad guys. The Brothers Grimm were flabbergasted, finding it hard to swallow that they’d been outsmarted by us kids, especially since we managed this feat on our own! Moon Squire was eager to get the Brothers Grimm handed over to the cops, so he could dash home in time for supper with Mom. This interaction showcased how green our New Champions team still is. Liberty playfully hinted that she had a treat in store for us all, and I secretly hoped it would be a New Champions mobile phone, sparing me the long bus rides.

2023 saw the unveiling of the New Champions Variant cover series, introducing a fresh batch of characters who were marketed as secret sidekicks to our beloved Marvel heroes. Their surge in popularity paved the way for these newcomers to gradually enter the main Marvel universe over several titles last year. These are the heroes who will comprise the New Champions roster, with some hinting at potential future antagonists. In Steve Foxe’s run on Spider-Woman, we met Liberty, Hellrune, Moon Squire, and Cadet Marvel as part of a team known as The Assembly.

Foxe shared, “The moment I laid eyes on the New Champions variants, my thoughts began to spin with ideas about their potential origins, abilities, and secret identities. Figuring out the characters from the covers was a unique creative journey unlike any other I’ve experienced. I can hardly contain my excitement to introduce a fresh batch of Marvel heroes (and a few villains!) in New Champions, all brought to life seamlessly by Ivan Fiorelli, making each newcomer feel as if they’ve always been an integral part of the universe.

Fiorelli expressed his eagerness to delve into “New Champions”. What gets him pumped about this venture is the prospect of introducing new characters into the Marvel Universe, and discovering something entirely fresh. These upcoming heroes have their unique narratives, and he can’t wait to observe how they develop visually as the narrative unfolds. He hopes that readers will find our pages just as captivating to read as he will find them a pleasure to illustrate!

Foxe has long yearned to create a young superhero team in his work – this period of life is when individuals discover their true selves, and incorporating Norse enchantments, powerful punches, or unintentional gateways to hell into that personal journey can lead to a storytelling treasure trove.

The exclusive preview of New Champions #1 is below. The issue goes on sale Wednesday, January 8th.
