Marvel Studios is facing a period of uncertainty, and the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t as clear as it once was. For a long time, it seemed like nothing could stop the success of Disney’s superhero films. But recently, things haven’t been going as smoothly, especially since the end of the hugely popular Infinity Saga and the start of the more complex Multiverse Saga. Both critics and box office numbers show this shift: seven of the ten lowest-earning Marvel movies, and five of the worst-reviewed on Rotten Tomatoes, have been released since *Avengers: Endgame*.
To help revitalize the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday* is bringing back Robert Downey Jr. and other popular actors from previous Marvel films. However, the release schedule looks quite different now. While three Marvel movies came out in 2025, only two are planned for next year: *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* and *Doomsday*. And 2027 currently only has one film scheduled: *Avengers: Secret Wars*. Disney recently removed an unannounced Marvel movie from the schedule and replaced it with a sequel to *The Simpsons Movie*, which wasn’t unexpected. This means Phase 6 will have fewer releases than any other phase in the MCU.
Phase 6 Is Marvel’s Smallest Ever… And Yet Might Also Be Its Biggest
The sixth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is planned to conclude with the film *Secret Wars*. Because this movie is expected to significantly change the MCU, it feels like a fitting end to both Phase 6 and the entire Multiverse Saga. However, Phase 6 will be the shortest phase in the MCU so far, consisting of just four movies: *The Fantastic Four: First Steps*, *Brand New Day*, *Doomsday*, and *Secret Wars*. With no further films currently scheduled, it’s now certain that Phase 6 will have the fewest releases of any MCU phase.
MCU Phase | # Of Movies |
---|---|
Phase 1 | 6 |
Phase 2 | 6 |
Phase 3 | 11 |
Phase 4 | 7 |
Phase 5 | 6 |
Phase 6 | 4 |
Let’s be real, the MCU isn’t just about the films anymore – Disney+ is a huge part of the equation now. And Phase 6 is *packed* with shows! We’re looking at *Eyes of Wakanda*, *Marvel Zombies*, *Wonder Man*, a second (and potentially third, depending on how things shake out) season of *Daredevil: Born Again*, *Vision Quest*, another season of *Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man*, and likely more *X-Men ’97*. Oh, and don’t forget a special presentation featuring The Punisher. Honestly, the sheer volume of streaming content is starting to feel more like Phases 4 and 5, even though Disney has talked about scaling back the flow of new shows.
Even though Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe only has four announced movies so far, it’s shaping up to be the biggest one yet. This is largely due to the ambitious scope of *Doomsday* and *Secret Wars*. Over two dozen actors are already confirmed for *Doomsday*, and that’s *without* including several major heroes like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel. Plus, rumors suggest even more cameos, like Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprising their roles as Spider-Man, and Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine. With such a massive cast and grand scale, these upcoming films could dwarf even *Infinity War* and *Endgame*.
The fact that Phase 6 will have fewer releases isn’t necessarily a negative. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has produced so many movies and shows recently that audiences may be experiencing fatigue. The previous release schedule of around three projects per year, which started in 2017, doesn’t seem to be the most effective way to maintain both quality and box office success – as we saw with only one release in 2024.
Taking a year between *Doomsday* and *Secret Wars* without releasing another Marvel movie could actually increase excitement for *Secret Wars* and make it feel like a truly massive event. Marvel needs to prioritize making high-quality films, and while this change doesn’t guarantee that, it’s a move in the right direction.
The new Spider-Man movie, *Brand New Day*, is scheduled to come out on July 31st, 2026. *Avengers: Doomsday* will be released on December 18th, 2026, and *Avengers: Secret Wars* will follow on December 17th, 2027.
