Be warned, this article reveals major plot points from episode 6 of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. As many fans predicted, Jessica Jones has returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the latest season. Krysten Ritter reprises her role as the witty private investigator in episode 6, “Requiem.” Her return happens as Wilson Fisk’s task force ramps up its efforts against vigilantes following the death of Vanessa. In a questionable decision, the task force targeted Jessica Jones’ home, where her daughter – whose father is the missing Luke Cage – was present. It’s never a good idea to provoke a protective mother, especially one with superpowers. However, Jessica Jones’ return also came with an odd detail.
Even though Jessica Jones was seen as a significant threat – enough for Kingpin and his team to try and eliminate her – she tells Matt Murdock that her powers haven’t been the same since having her daughter, Danielle. This is mentioned briefly, and seems a little odd considering how easily she defeats the AVTF in a couple of action scenes. It feels similar to other instances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where powerful heroes are intentionally weakened to create more dramatic tension. This could also be a setup for a future storyline that fans might not appreciate.
Why Jessica Jones is Losing Her Powers (& The Accidental Problem it Causes)

Let’s be clear: even when she doesn’t seem at her strongest, Jessica Jones is still a very powerful hero. The fight scene in episode 6 is cleverly done – it’s almost the opposite of how Daredevil usually fights, with all the action happening off-screen and hidden from view. Surprisingly, this actually makes Jessica seem more powerful and reinforces her reputation. It makes sense she’d easily defeat the agents – she is Jessica Jones, after all. The scene also lets us experience the fight from the attackers’ point of view, showing how they struggle against both her strength and her intimidating presence.
Jessica Jones’s powers have always been a bit unpredictable since her introduction in the Netflix Marvel shows. This was partly due to inconsistent writing, but also because of her PTSD from past abuse and a difficult childhood. She often struggled internally, and her emotions could limit her abilities. The new series, Born Again, seems to be continuing this pattern, but this time because of motherhood and the recent revelation that Luke Cage is away on a secret mission. This isn’t entirely new, though – Spider-Man’s powers have also been affected by his mental state in multiple versions of the story, as seen in the trailer for Brand New Day.
When Jessica was attacked at home, her impressive display of power suggests her limits might be self-imposed – she even tells Matt she was simply angry they came after her. It’s revealed she’s been quietly assisting Murdock and Karen with information about Fisk’s operation, a natural reaction given her desire to protect a child. Even while feeling vulnerable, Jessica remains strong, and we only suspect her powers are weakening because she mentions it herself.
It’s unusual that Jessica Jones’ powers are changing after having a baby, as there’s no similar situation in her comic book history. Marvel needs to be careful, though, because after the controversial storyline about Black Widow’s infertility in Avengers: Age of Ultron, suggesting a woman loses part of herself by becoming a mother could be seen negatively. Hopefully, the show will explain why her powers are unstable, and it won’t result in her losing them altogether. It would be a letdown if the story used her motherhood as a reason for a power decrease.
