As a fan who appreciates creative reinterpretations of classic stories, let me share an intriguing twist on the well-loved nursery rhyme about the spider climbing up the waterspout. You might be surprised to learn that in the world of comic books, Spider-Man and Deadpool actually have a daughter! Yes, you heard it right – Itsy Bitsy, born from the bond between Peter Parker and Wade Wilson. I’ll dive into the details next time we chat…
2016’s “Spider-Man/Deadpool” brought back the iconic creative team of writer Joe Kelly and artist Ed McGuinness, who initially introduced characters like Blind Al, T-Ray (a zombie-like antagonist), and Widdle Wade, a miniature clone derived from Wade. Unfortunately, Widdle Wade had a brief lifespan and only appeared twice before passing away. Later on, Kelly and McGuinness conceived another offspring of Deadpool.
In issue #8 of Spider-Man/Deadpool, Weasel – Deadpool’s ex-arms dealer and once close friend from the Kelly/McGuinness Deadpool series – is brought back as Patient Zero, a nemesis who stole information from Peter Parker’s company, Parker Industries, to create genetically altered monstrosities.
Among these “Manstrosities”, one was not human but rather a character known as Itsy Bitsy, who is often referred to as the daughter of Spider-Man and Deadpool. This blue-skinned, six-armed character made an introduction to her ‘daddies’ with a unique take on a nursery rhyme: “and the itsy bitsy spider brought upon all the agony.
Originally, Patient Zero struck a pact with the demon Mephisto. By combining the blood of Spider-Man and Deadpool, they imbued Susan Mary with a mix of both superheroes’ abilities, resulting in the creation of a hybrid character known as “Itsy Bitsy.” At first, she desired to work alongside her two alleged “dads” (a term she often employed), but subsequently plotted to assassinate Spider-Dad and Dead-Dad. Later, she decided to take on villains in their stead.
It appears that Itsy Bitsy may have met her demise when Kelly and McGuinness left the Spider-Man/Deadpool comic series at issue #18 in 2017. However, just as we thought it was over, a final panel showed our tiny villain transformed into spider size, once again scaling the drainpipe, with a wink to the audience through her fourth-wall-breaking statement: “I’ll be back soon.
Eight years have passed, and on the last page of this week’s Amazing Spider-Man #2, we see a fully grown Itsy Bitsy reappear. This story is penned by Kelly with art by Pepe Larraz. In her new ninja-like attire, Itsy Bitsy is seen preparing to impale an unconscious Aleksei Sytsevich, also known as the Rhino. After his rampage, he has been recuperating at the Ravencroft Institute following a near-fatal heart attack.
During an investigation at Aleksei’s apartment (which used to be on Seinfeld), Spider-Man encountered the Rhino’s chaos. Suddenly, his spidey senses started blaring, and it seemed like every villain from his long list of enemies appeared. It turned out that Itsy Bitsy had injected Spider-Man with harmful toxins. Norman Osborn then disclosed that these were biological agents designed to induce delusions, hallucinations, fear, and rage, essentially making Spider-Man’s mind a ticking time bomb. Peter began to suspect the same thing happened to the Rhino, unaware that the Hobgoblin and the elusive Hellgate were orchestrating these events behind the scenes.
Amazing Spider-Man #2 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
