Marvel Reveals Ultimate Nick Fury’s Horrific Backstory (and It’s Straight Out of Nolan Movie)

As a seasoned comic book aficionado with over four decades of immersion in this vibrant universe, I must say that Ultimate Universe: One Year In has left me utterly spellbound and deeply disconcerted. This gripping tale by Deniz Camp, Chris Condon, Jonas Scharf, Alessandro Cappuccio, Mattia Iacono, Bryan Valenza, and Travis Lanham masterfully explores the darker recesses of the human psyche while deftly weaving a complex narrative that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

2024 saw the massive success story of Ultimate Marvel, as each book launched – including Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate Black Panther, and The Ultimates – garnered praise from both fans and critics and climbed to the top of the sales charts. Deniz Camp, Chris Condon, Jonas Scharf, Alessandro Cappuccio, Mattia Iacono, Bryan Valenza, and Travis Lanham’s book, Ultimate Universe: One Year In, celebrates the first anniversary of Earth-6160, inviting readers to explore the realm of The Council – the superhumans governing the world on behalf of The Maker – and introducing this universe’s version of Nick Fury.

In every Marvel Universe where he appears, Nick Fury often assumes the lead role for S.H.I.E.L.D., acting as the world’s top spy. However, on Earth-6160, his position is slightly altered. Instead of S.H.I.E.L.D., this world has H.A.N.D. – Heroic Anomaly Neutralization Directorate, which seems to be modeled after the villainous ninja clan that Daredevil frequently confronts. Unlike other versions of Nick Fury, this one works for the malevolent creator of Earth-6160, the Maker, assisting the evil version of Reed Richards from Earth-1610 to maintain his world without superheroes. As a result, this Nick Fury’s life has taken a drastically different path than other versions, leading him to make a significant decision that uncovers a shocking revelation for both himself and readers.

Nick Fury-6160 Has a Dark Past and a Terrible Secret

For decades, I’ve admired a figure who shared the name and many life experiences with Nick Fury from Earth-616, often referred to as the Earth-6160 version. He bravely fought in World War II alongside Dum Dum Duggan and the Howling Commandos, and later, he embarked on thrilling espionage missions as a member of the CIA. Looking back, those old days seem like a stark contrast in black and white, with clear distinctions between good and evil. Somewhere before the establishment of S.H.I.E.L.D. on Earth-616, this Fury was graced with a revelation from The Maker.

From that point onward, Fury served as the Creator’s primary spy and enforcer. He eliminated numerous heroes, including 3-D Man, the initial alien Vision, and Devil Dinosaur. He silenced Mantis, preventing her from becoming the Celestial Madonna and even took the life of his former comrade, Dum Dum Dugan. He orchestrated the massacre of the Inhumans, as depicted in an issue where he’s shown shooting a young Black Bolt. He also ended the lives of the Power Pack’s children and tampered with the minds of several super-scientists, carrying out every command given by the Creator, at the cost of his inner tranquility and dignity, all in the name of a supposed greater good.

In my perspective, at his very core, Nick Fury stands firm by what’s right. Across all realities, he’s a man who doesn’t shy away from getting his hands dirty. He’s not one to hesitate when it comes to actions others might deem excessive, as long as they align with the greater good, or at least his interpretation of it. Fury-6160 acknowledges that his actions have been horrific and he understands that the Maker and the Council are monstrous entities. In the Ultimate Universe, one year on, the narrative unfolds like a confession to an unseen reader, with Fury revealing a plan to atone for the lives he’s taken – he intends to destroy The Beast, the primary Cumulo-Carrier of H.A.N.D., thereby eliminating the Council.

Throughout the narrative, Fury-6160 often becomes engrossed in his internal thoughts, causing him to momentarily forget his surroundings as the Council gently prods him to continue. At a certain juncture, Captain Britain snaps, “That’s enough of your rambling history,” which initially appears to be mere impatience during the intel briefing. However, when Fury eventually reveals his plan and triggers the self-destruct sequence, the Council doesn’t seem overly concerned. As the countdown reaches its end, nothing explodes, shocking Fury, but instead, the Council merely laughs in response.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve got to say that Fury has made more than one attempt on the Council, and they’re reminiscing about these attempts – from an island explosion, to a contaminated handshake – all while chuckling at his confession. However, it seems Fury didn’t see Emmanuel Da Costa coming, as he ended up being engulfed in flames and eliminated by him.

As Fury’s body cools, the Council ponders why the Creator doesn’t simply replace Fury. The explanation is straightforward – any spy who wouldn’t consider betrayal isn’t valuable as a spy, and they find themselves surrounded by Nick Fury LMDs (Life-Model Decoy) in glass containers. Upon reflection, they decide that the Maker maintains this system because tormenting Fury, forcing him to carry out heinous acts while dying and being reborn, brings joy to the Maker. The entire scenario bears a chilling resemblance to Chris Nolan’s The Prestige, albeit with Fury lacking control over the situation, with the Maker instead manipulating the “trick” of Fury’s resurrections.

Fury-6160’s Futile Life Shows the True Darkness of the Maker’s World

As the Ultimate Universe progresses into its next stage, the comic book “Ultimate Universe: One Year In” acts as a sobering reminder to all about the grim state of this Earth. The creator, resembling the character from “The Prestige,” skillfully demonstrates the sinister nature of his new world order, which is constructed upon a base of numerous graves, many of them filled due to the ongoing cycle of human rights violations, deaths, and resurrections orchestrated by Nick Fury-6160. In this distorted reality, figures such as Fury are merely manipulated pieces in a much larger game controlled by a monstrous entity.
