With the next big Avengers movie, Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for 2026, Marvel Studios is facing a tight deadline to assemble a new team. Recent previews hint that the original Avengers from the Multiverse Saga, especially Captain America and Thor, will be central to the story, which is a shift from earlier plans. We were initially told that Captain America: Brave New World would kick off the rebuilding process after Endgame, focusing on Sam Wilson as the new Captain America. However, the Thunderbolts movie complicated things, though it still presented Sam’s team as the primary Avengers group, with Bucky’s team being referred to as the “New Avengers.”
With Captain America and Thor returning, and with Mark Ruffalo, Tom Holland, and Jeremy Renner likely to reprise their roles, it’s still a mystery who will join Sam Wilson’s new Avengers team. While it makes sense he’d gather the most powerful heroes to defend Earth, there aren’t existing relationships to bring them together quickly. For example, Riri Williams would be a brilliant addition with her incredible tech skills, and Wakanda is already interested in her – she definitely wouldn’t miss a fight against Doom. However, because of how the ‘Ironheart’ series ended, it seems unlikely she’ll even be acknowledged, let alone rejoin the team.
Ironheart Created A Huge Devil-Shaped Problem For Doomsday

Riri Williams seems like the natural choice to carry on Tony Stark’s legacy, especially with Spider-Man’s story moving in a different direction. However, a major issue has arisen: she’s currently under the control of Mephisto, a development revealed at the end of her 2025 series. This storyline is too significant to ignore or downplay, as doing so would either diminish its impact or create confusion for readers.
Marvel has a lot on its plate with the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, and it’s unlikely they can effectively include everything. The film already seemed overly crowded, and now with Steve Rogers returning, it’s hard to imagine it being less than three hours long. Between introducing Sam Wilson as the new leader of the Avengers, debuting the Fantastic Four, a possible conflict with the Thunderbolts, bringing Captain America back into the mix, establishing Doctor Doom as a major threat, and continuing the multiverse storyline with the X-Men, there simply isn’t enough room to give Ironheart’s story the development it deserves. Her potential arc needs more space than the movie can realistically offer given all the other elements and action sequences.
Marvel Studios faces a difficult choice regarding Riri Williams (Ironheart). They can either bring her back into the story and pretend the events of her recent arc – specifically, her demonic possession – never happened, or they can simply write her out. While ignoring the possession feels unlikely, it might be necessary to accommodate James Rhodes’ role in the Secret Invasion storyline. However, it increasingly seems Riri won’t return, which would be another example of promising character development after Endgame being abandoned for larger event storylines. This is a frustrating situation, as the upcoming major MCU crossover will likely have to disregard both a powerful villain like Mephisto and a now-powerful character like Ironheart – a truly unbelievable outcome, even for those who didn’t particularly enjoy Ironheart’s story.
