Richard Rider is stepping into a new phase as Nova, and there’s no connection to an upcoming Disney+ series. For quite some time, there have been whispers about Nova becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, whether through a TV show on Disney+ or on the big screen. Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, along with others, have expressed great enthusiasm for Nova, so it’s only a matter of time before we see him in action. Despite rumors of a Nova series being imminent, production halted earlier this year. However, don’t worry, dear fan, Nova is not being overlooked in the comic books.
Nova, one of the primary characters, features prominently in “Imperial,” a four-part epic saga penned by Jonathan Hickman and illustrated by Iban Coello and Federico Vicentini. This series aims to launch an exciting new phase of cosmic storytelling, reshaping the dynamics for heavyweights such as Hulk, Black Panther, She-Hulk, Star-Lord, the Shi’ar, Skrulls, Kree, and more. The initial two issues of “Imperial” have already sparked significant changes across the Marvel Universe. In this narrative, Richard Rider’s Nova is collaborating with Star-Lord to uncover the mystery behind a series of political assassinations. This storyline will be further explored in an upcoming spinoff series based on “Imperial.
Nova Gets a New Comic Series While We Wait For His Disney+ Show
Richard Rider will be the leading character in the comic book series, “Nova: Centurion“, which is being penned by Jed MacKay (known for his work on “X-Men“) and illustrated by Álvaro López (notable for his work on “Predator: Black, White & Blood” ). The news was unveiled at the Marvel Comics: Next Big Thing Panel during San Diego Comic-Con recently. Alongside “Nova: Centurion“, another spinoff from the “Imperial” series was announced, this one being “Planet She-Hulk” by Stephanie Phillips (previously worked on “Phoenix“) and Aaron Kuder (known for his work on “Daredevil” ). Additionally, Richard Rider will also appear in a one-shot comic titled “Imperial War“, written by MacKay, which should serve as a prelude to the events of “Nova: Centurion“.
It’s possible that some viewers had doubts about Nova following the announcement of a delay in his Disney+ series. Yet, it’s evident that Marvel harbors grand plans for this Cosmic Hero. A halted streaming show doesn’t necessarily mean it will never air. The pause in Nova‘s production is due to Marvel Television adopting a new approach to its release strategy. Previously, they managed their TV productions similarly to big-budget films by announcing future releases gradually over time. However, this method has been replaced, with Marvel now following the traditional path for television by hiring showrunners to guide the projects.
Releasing “Nova: Centurion” is a smart decision for Nova’s future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). By offering a fresh comic book, it allows fans to become acquainted with the character ahead of his MCU debut. This way, when he does appear, there will be a collection of recent comics available for purchase. It’s a mutually beneficial situation. Furthermore, there’s potential that “Nova: Centurion” could serve as inspiration for an upcoming Disney+ series.
In 2024, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, confirmed to ComicBook that the Nova series for Disney+ was being worked on. Winderbaum expressed, “We have a soft spot for Nova. We are currently in the initial stages of developing Nova.
Winderbaum announced a change in our operations at Marvel Studios: we’re operating more like a conventional studio, focusing on developing projects rather than solely producing them. One of the projects we have in mind is ‘Nova’. I’m a fan of Nova and Rich Rider myself, and I hope this project sees the light of day. The world can be chaotic, but with determination, we can bring these ideas to life – I’d love to witness a Nova series someday.
In the comic book Nova: Centurion, it’s stated that Richard Rider is available for hire with his cosmic powers. With the Xandarian Worldmind, a sentient library containing an entire civilization’s culture and history, requiring frequent and costly energy boosts, Rider finds himself in need of financial support. The narrative describes him as a lone space explorer who uncovers the dark truth about the new Galactic Union. However, his actions may eventually lead to him getting his hands dirty with questionable funds.
