Marvel Studios consistently strives to create unforgettable villains, initially facing criticism for one-dimensional antagonists with uninteresting motives in the early phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the narrative took a significant turn when the Mad Titan, Thanos, emerged from his seat and began making his presence felt. Instead of seeking dominance, Thanos aimed to usher in a new era of abundance for the universe by exterminating half of all life. He didn’t discriminate between individuals, allowing fate to determine who survived and who perished. Faced with the loss of many loved ones, the Avengers embarked on a daring time travel mission to retrieve the Infinity Stones and reverse Thanos’ actions.
After Thanos met his end during the Battle of Earth, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been on the hunt for its next major antagonist. Now, that quest is complete! Enter Doctor Doom in “Avengers: Doomsday”. Although it appears there’s no more space for Thanos, actor Josh Brolin hasn’t closed the door on reappearing in the MCU.
In a chat on the Josh Horowitz-hosted Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor shared that his connections with Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo Brothers have never been stronger than they currently are.
Downey and I chat about four to six times each year,” Brolin explained. “On the other hand, I speak with the Russos almost every week, often four to six times. Joe and I are involved in a business together, which means we communicate frequently. Nevertheless, I have a deep affection for both of them.
In simpler terms, Horowitz subtly hinted at the possibility by inquiring if Brolin might once again wear the motion capture suit for the character Thanos, should an appealing opportunity arise.
He went on to say, ‘Definitely, they’ll cook up something exciting!’ He added with a hint of uncertainty, ‘After all, who can predict? Who can predict? That project took a decade to build – quite an epic endeavor. As for what they’re planning next, I’m not sure, but it’s bound to be intriguing.’
The Russos likely don’t want Brolin’s character to overshadow their latest Marvel villain, yet they might find an appropriate part for him, considering that the decision-makers at Marvel Studios are attentive to fan suggestions.
Killing Thanos Would Prove Just How Dangerous the MCU’s Doctor Doom Is
A popular scene from Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 “Secret Wars” comic book often circulates on social media, depicting Doctor Doom brutally killing Thanos by tearing out his spine. Ever since Downey Jr.’s casting as Doctor Doom was announced, fans have been urging the Russo brothers to reenact this violent scene in live-action. Although it’s uncertain if the directors will comply, Brolin, who plays Thanos, has expressed readiness for the opportunity should it arise.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
