Marvel Star Breaks Silence on MCU Return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (And Teases His Costume)

In July of next year, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is set to hit theaters, marking nine years since Michael Mando’s character Mac Gargan was apprehended in a FBI sting operation back in 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Following an altercation on the Staten Island Ferry where Mando’s scorpion tattooed criminal was injured, and his illegal arms deal with Adrian Toomes/the Vulture (Michael Keaton) thwarted by Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Gargan vowed revenge in a prison scene that appeared after the credits.

It appears that Gargan’s prolonged imprisonment is coming to a close. Furthermore, reliable sources report that Mando will don the Scorpion costume for the movie “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” with Destin Daniel Cretton taking on directing duties, who was also behind “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

In an Instagram post, the actor from Better Call Saul, Sting, posted a selfie showcasing his scorpion tattoo. Following this, Mando published a sequence of photos suggesting the Scorpion suit, which has been altered since the mutated Gargan first donned his battlesuit with a mechanical tail in 1964’s Amazing Spider-Man issue #20.

Mando posted Leinil Francis Yu’s unique cover for the 2019 version of “Absolute Carnage: Miles Morales”, which depicts Gargan embodying both his villain personas, Venom and Scorpion. At a time when Gargan was the carrier of the symbiote that dislikes Spider-Man, this cover was created. Also shared was a Marvel Legends action figure by Hasbro, modeled after Scorpion’s look from the 1994 “Spider-Man: The Animated Series”.

It’s intriguing that Mando’s post hints at Gargan possibly taking up the role of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Venom. This is significant because, as seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s post-credits scene, a fragment of Eddie Brock’s alien symbiote has found its way into the MCU. Gargan originally became Venom back in 2005’s Marvel Knights: Spider-Man #10, and later joined Norman Osborn’s Thunderbolts team. He even pretended to be the black-suited Spider-Man in Dark Avengers.

It’s noteworthy that, during the “Brand New Day” period in Spider-Man comics, a Venomized Scorpion engaged in combat with Eddie Brock (who was serving as Anti-Venom) – this occurred after Peter Parker’s identity had been wiped from public consciousness.

In the new Spider-Man movie titled “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” Mando resumes his part as Mac Gargan/Scorpion alongside an impressive cast featuring Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/the Punisher and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/the Hulk. The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously helmed “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” replacing Jon Watts from the Home trilogy. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers wrote the script for this Marvel Cinematic Universe production, with Amy Pascal of Pascal Pictures and Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios serving as producers.

Sony Pictures has slated Spider-Man: Brand New Day to release on July 31, 2026.
