It’s quite common for actors to switch between playing characters from both Marvel and DC universes, as demonstrated by Djimon Hounsou who has played more roles in both the DC Universe and Marvel Cinematic Universe than any other actor. He shows no signs of slowing down. During the early 2000s, when superhero movies were gaining popularity, some actors even had entire runs before Marvel and DC officially adopted their current franchise model. Many fans might be surprised to learn that several stars they now identify with iconic heroes or villains began their careers in very different roles.
Example: Josh Brolin is primarily known for his portrayal of the MCU’s formidable villain Thanos, yet he has also made significant contributions to both the Fox Universe (as in Deadpool 2) and DC Comics (Jonah Hex). In a recent conversation, Brolin disclosed that another comic book role was offered to him on the DC side, but he opted to decline it.
During an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast with Josh Horowitz, Brolin was asked if he found it more challenging to decline roles in DC films or James Cameron’s Avatar series. You might recall that last fall, Brolin admitted to being in discussions for the part of Green Lantern Hal Jordan in the upcoming HBO series “Lanterns.” This show aims to delve deeper into the Green Lantern lore within the new DCU franchise, following the introduction of the Corps by Nathan Fillion’s character Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s “Superman.” However, Brolin ultimately decided against the series, and the role of Hal Jordan was taken by Kyle Chandler from “Friday Night Lights,” who will appear alongside Aaron Pierre as Green Lantern John Stewart in “Lanterns.” Despite this, Brolin remained tight-lipped about what his potential role and storyline would have entailed, and he was hesitant to express much enthusiasm for the series.
I’ve learned that Green Lantern is going to star Kyle Chandler and Paula Patton, two talented actors I had the pleasure of working with on a pilot directed by Antoine Fuqua, alongside Paula Patton, who I have great admiration for. I can hardly contain my excitement about this project… I’m eagerly anticipating it! Brolin hinted that he’s thrilled because he’s a big fan of Kyle Chandler, praising his talent and skill.
The quote raises an intriguing question since, at the moment of writing this, Paula Patton hasn’t been confirmed as being in the cast for ‘Lanterns’. Was Brolin perhaps mistaken, accidentally revealing something prematurely, or is it a reference to an earlier version of the project that has since been scrapped? Given that they worked together on the TV movie/pilot ‘Murder Book’ (2005), directed by Antoine Fuqua, it seems clear that Brolin was indeed referring to Patton.
In his own words, Brolin found it particularly challenging to refuse Cameron’s offer. When Cameron proposed the Avatar sequels, Brolin was already committed to Deadpool 2, as well as other projects such as the Avengers.
What Is DCU Lanterns About?
In this rendition, the characters Kyle Chandler portrays Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre embodies John Stewart, both being Green Lanterns hailing from Sector 2814 on Earth. They become entangled in a puzzling, earthbound enigma as they delve into an unsolved murder within the heartland of America.
The ensemble features Nathan Fillion returning to his Superman film character as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, along with Kelly Macdonald from Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Garret Dillahunt from Fear the Walking Dead, Poorna Jagannathan from Deli Boys, Sherman Augustus from Stranger Things, Nicole Ari Parker from And Just Like That…, Jason Ritter from Matlock, Chris Coy from Lawmen: Bass Reeves, Jasmine Cephas, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro from The New Pope, and Paul Ben-Victor in an unspecified part, hailing from HBO’s The Wire and Entourage.
It’s been widely discussed among DC enthusiasts that, given the listed cast, many characters and storylines could have surprising revelations. Dillahunt is believed to portray the antagonist Blackhand, while Ben-Victor might be Atrocitus, the enraged embodiment of the Red Lanterns. Given Sinestro’s presence, it seems that _Lanterns_ may hint at an upcoming DCU crossover similar to “Blackest Night” or another event where cosmic and supernatural elements unite in a potential “Crisis” scenario.
In the role of lead producer and supervisor, Chris Mundy (famous for “True Detective” and “Ozark”) collaborates with Damon Lindelof (known for “Lost”), Tom King (noted for “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”), as well as James Gunn (associated with Superman) and Peter Safran (recognized for “Creature Commandos”) in the positions of co-producers on the project titled “Lanterns”.
