Marvel Studios’ recent Multiverse Saga has faced criticism from fans. Following the huge success of the Infinity Saga, the studio began producing more content for Disney+, which led to concerns that the quality of individual movies and shows was declining. Lower ticket sales for some recent Marvel releases seemed to confirm these worries. As a result, Marvel announced it would scale back its plans and focus on making fewer, but higher-quality projects. This shift led to speculation that the planned *Blade* movie, starring Mahershala Ali, might be cancelled, with some suggesting it could be replaced by a team-up movie called *Midnight Sons*. However, the *Blade* movie hasn’t been cancelled after all.
In a recent interview with *Elle* magazine, while discussing her work on Guillermo del Toro’s *Frankenstein*, actress Mia Goth confirmed she’s still involved in the upcoming *Blade* reboot. Though she couldn’t share many details about where the movie stands, Goth seems optimistic about the delays, believing the extra time will result in a better film. She explained, “It’s for the best that it’s taken the time that it has. They want to do it right.”
Goth’s role is important, especially because rumors suggest she’ll be playing Lilith, a powerful supernatural villain. If true, Lilith could become a key antagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s growing supernatural storylines. With characters like Mephisto already appearing and more supernatural figures being introduced, Lilith could be a major threat not only to Blade, but also to a team of heroes in a future team-up event.
Should a Blade Movie Even Happen Now?
The path to making a *Blade* movie has been remarkably difficult for Marvel Studios. Announced with great fanfare at Comic-Con in 2019, the project has faced constant setbacks, going through several writers and two different directors. These delays stemmed from various problems, including disagreements about the story and reports that star Mahershala Ali wasn’t happy with early script drafts, which seemed to give his character a smaller role. The significant changes—including abandoning a whole concept set in the 1920s—show how challenging it’s been to figure out where *Blade* fits into the current Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Okay, as a huge MCU fan, here’s what I think: all these delays with the *Blade* movie are worrying. Instead of stubbornly trying to force a solo film that just isn’t clicking, Marvel should really consider introducing Blade – and Mia Goth’s Lilith, while they’re at it – in that *Midnight Sons* team-up movie everyone’s talking about. It would be a perfect way to establish the supernatural side of things and finally let us see Mahershala Ali as the Daywalker without putting *all* the pressure on him to launch a whole new franchise. If he knocks it out of the park in a team movie, the hype will be real, and they can then confidently move forward with a *Blade* spinoff built on a solid foundation, instead of all this years-long development struggle. It just makes more sense creatively and would get fans excited again.
