In Marvel’s upcoming “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2, one of the long-standing enigmas from the Defenders Saga might finally find resolution. The Defenders Saga, which spanned from 2015 to 2019 on Netflix, brought some of Marvel’s most authentic, gritty, and realistic live-action street tales to life. Originally existing outside the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Defenders Saga was confirmed as part of the MCU in 2024, making “Daredevil: Born Again” a genuine continuation of Netflix’s “Daredevil” series rather than a remake.
The series “Daredevil: Born Again” brings back a number of characters from the Defenders Saga, such as Matt Murdock (Daredevil), Wilson Fisk (Kingpin), Frank Castle (Punisher), Karen Page, Foggy Nelson, Vanessa Fisk, Benjamin Poindexter (Bullseye), and others. As of now, the other Defenders have not made a comeback, but this will change with the second season of “Born Again,” set to air in 2026. The second season promises a reunion between Matt Murdock, played by Charlie Cox, and Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter). It’s also speculated that other Defenders might appear as well.
Luke Cage’s Defenders Saga Ending Needs to Be Resolved in the MCU
The Defenders’ Epic consisted of characters such as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, The Defenders, The Punisher, and Luke Cage. In this series, Mike Colter portrayed Luke Cage, a man who acquired indestructible skin and supernatural strength during an experimental prison project. He then utilized his abilities to become the “Harlem Hero,” confronting the criminal empires of antagonists like Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes (Mahershala Ali), councilwoman Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodard), her half-brother Willis “Diamondback” Stryker (Erik LaRay Harvey), and the ruthless John “Bushmaster” McIver (Mustafa Shakir). Each of them sought dominance over Harlem’s Paradise, a nightclub that represented the power center in the criminal underworld of Harlem.
At the end of season 2, Luke Cage gained ownership of Harlem’s Paradise through Dillard’s will. By showcasing his immense power, he managed to control other crime bosses in New York City as well, suggesting he had taken over as Harlem’s new criminal mastermind. A glimpse into his ominous future was hinted at during a guest appearance in Jessica Jones season 3, but the developments since then have yet to be explored for six years. It was quite unexpected to witness Luke Cage morphing into an antagonist or antihero in the Defenders Saga, given his original character background from Marvel Comics.
In the Marvel Universe, the character Luke Cage, originally a hero-for-hire from Harlem, transformed into a commander of superpowered beings. He served on Thunderbolts squads, briefly collaborated with the Fantastic Four, and presided over multiple Avengers teams. It’s challenging to envision Mike Colter’s portrayal of Luke Cage assuming this role in the MCU if he reappears, but Marvel Studios has a chance to address this open-ended storyline and make Luke Cage more aligned with his comic book version.
Daredevil: Born Again is the Perfect Place for Luke Cage’s MCU Story to Continue
Although it’s not certain if Luke Cage will reappear in the MCU or if Mike Colter will continue to play him, the upcoming second season of “Daredevil: Born Again” offers a prime chance for his character to return and resolve the cliffhanger from “Luke Cage” season 2. Given that Krysten Ritter is reprising her role from the Defenders Saga, it seems logical for Mike Colter and Finn Jones (Iron Fist) to join as well, forming part of Daredevil’s new team to confront Kingpin, played by Vincent D’Onofrio. In the first season, Kingpin was elected Mayor of New York City.
In the Marvel Comics storyline “Devil’s Reign,” Mayor Fisk’s tale from “Born Again” is revisited and he outlaws vigilantes in New York City. Notably, Luke Cage steps into Fisk’s role as the city’s mayor. If this narrative were carried forward in the MCU, it would offer a compelling path to redemption for Cage, who took on a questionable role during the Defenders Saga. The upcoming “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2 is expected to delve deeper into the past adventures of the Defenders, given that the series has been designed with an understanding that it follows the Netflix shows, unlike its predecessor.
The first season of “Daredevil: Born Again” was initially filmed as a standalone series, distinct from the Defenders Saga, before the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Post-strikes, significant creative changes were made, including bringing on Dario Scardapane as showrunner and integrating the series more closely with the original Defenders Saga shows. As a result, there was a noticeable disjointedness, but for the second season, this issue will be resolved, allowing it to potentially reintroduce characters like Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and many others, helping answer some of the Defenders Saga’s lingering questions.
