Fervent fans are showing their teeth in anticipation as Marvel Studios selected another performer to portray the MCU’s Blade, with Mahershala Ali, who was previously cast for the role in 2019 and was set to star in an upcoming film, not chosen this time. Despite being confirmed for the part five years ago, Ali’s character has yet to make a true screen appearance.
So far, fans have only heard a voiceover from Ali and seen Wesley Snipes reappear as Blade outside of the MCU, but there’s no sign yet that Mahershala Ali will portray Blade in the Marvel Universe, as Marvel Studios has confirmed he won’t be in the upcoming “Marvel Zombies” series.
Recently, details about Marvel Studio’s forthcoming zombie-themed streaming show have emerged. It appears that Todd Williams, a veteran voice actor, will portray Blade in this upcoming series, contrary to popular expectation that Ali would assume the role (as reported by ComicBook).
It was previously announced several months ago that Blade would appear in a new R-rated series, leading many to believe that Ali would provide the voice for the famous vampire hunter, signifying his official Marvel Cinematic Universe introduction. However, it turns out that he will not be the one voicing the character instead.
As a passionate film aficionado, I’m proud to say that I’ve made a name for myself by portraying Titan in the groundbreaking Amazon Prime Video series, Invincible. Interestingly enough, I stepped into the shoes previously held by Ali for two episodes! Additionally, I brought Rick Mason to life in the critically acclaimed Spider-Man: Miles Morales video game.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I eagerly anticipate stepping into the realm of the undead alongside some heavyweight talents such as Hailee Steinfeld, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, and Elizabeth Olsen in the upcoming “Marvel Zombies” series, set to infect Disney+ starting September 24. This gripping four-part adventure chronicles a resilient band of Avengers grappling with survival amidst an apocalyptic wasteland overrun by a zombie plague that has snuffed out the lives of many super-powered titans, including Iron Man, Thanos, and the Scarlet Witch.
What’s the State of Mahershala Ali’s Blade?
When it was initially revealed in 2019 that Mahershala Ali would be introducing Blade into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time, there was optimism about the character’s prospects moving forward.
seldom have I encountered a more fitting actor-to-character matchup in the realm of comic book films, but it seems my beloved Marvel hero, portrayed by Ali, is still waiting on the sidelines for his time to shine.
The primary reason for this situation is due to the slow progress in bringing the “Blade” movie to fruition. At present, “Blade” has cycled through multiple directors, screenwriters, and numerous story drafts, earning a reputation as an elusive challenge within the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s collection of films.
As per Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, the Blade project is indeed in motion and they’ve found a path they’re excited to follow. It seems that Mahershala Ali wasn’t part of the Marvel Zombies cast merely because they want his on-screen debut to hold significance.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s not just the Academy Award winner who doesn’t lend their voice to the animated version of their character. Characters like Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Black Widow are voiced by actors who sound similar, rather than the real people themselves.
It’s possible that the actor will debut as the formidable character in the rumored Midnight Suns movie, given the speculations and Blade’s significant role in the story. If he doesn’t make his appearance there, though, there’s a chance he might show up in his own solo film instead.
