Marvel Studios Delays Phase 7 & It’s Absolutely The Right Decision

Fans will have to wait a while for the next phase of Marvel movies, Phase 7. Right now, Marvel Studios, led by Kevin Feige, is finishing up the Multiverse Saga. It all begins with Avengers: Doomsday later this year, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, and bringing back original stars like Chris Evans as Captain America and Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. The saga will conclude with the epic Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for release in 2027.

Similar to how Marvel planned the Infinity Saga and the current Multiverse Saga, there’s already a roadmap for what comes after Avengers: Secret Wars. While Marvel Studios hasn’t officially revealed its plans for the next phase of the MCU, it’s likely they’ve already decided which characters and projects will be released after 2028. However, fans will have to wait a bit longer, as Phase 7 has been quietly pushed back.

MCU Phase 7 Is Officially Pushed Back

Originally, after Avengers: Secret Wars (scheduled for December 2027), Marvel Studios planned a new movie for February 2028 to start a new phase of the MCU. However, those plans have changed. Instead, a different movie will now be released in late July 2028.

It’s currently unknown whether Marvel Studios has just moved a planned February 2028 movie to a summer date, or if they’re working on a completely different film. Movies previously expected in February included Shang-Chi 2, a reboot of the X-Men series, and Black Panther 3, potentially starring Denzel Washington. Regardless, this means Phase 7 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been pushed back a few months, creating a longer wait between the end of that phase with Avengers: Secret Wars and the beginning of the next one.

Despite The Extended Wait, MCU Phase 7 Delay Makes Total Sense

I get why everyone’s eager to find out what Marvel has planned after the Multiverse Saga – the wait is tough! It reminds me a bit of the break we had after the Infinity Saga, which was understandable given everything that was going on, like the pandemic. Honestly, they could have taken even longer after films like Endgame and No Way Home to really emphasize that era was over. But with Secret Wars wrapping things up, this seven-month pause before Phase 7 feels just right to me. It’s a perfect amount of time to breathe and get ready for what’s next!

After the complex Multiverse Saga, Marvel Studios likely wants to move forward to Phase 7, but a clear separation between these eras is still needed. While Avengers: Endgame concluded a story, Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to completely reset the Marvel Cinematic Universe, planting story elements that will be important for future films. A long break between sagas isn’t ideal because it could cause audiences to forget the groundwork laid for Phase 7 by the time Secret Wars concludes. A six-month break is probably enough to distinguish the Multiverse Saga from what comes next without losing the setup for Phase 7.

Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
