Marvel Studios Is Developing (At Least) 3 X-Men Projects For MCU Phase 7 & Beyond

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m so excited about what’s coming next! After everything that happened in the Infinity Saga and the Multiverse Saga, it feels like the MCU is getting a fresh start. We’re heading into a new era – Phases 7 through 9 – and finally, the X-Men are joining the fun! It sounds like Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027 will be a big turning point, almost a reset, as Kevin Feige said. He’s promised it’s all “about beginnings,” and honestly, that’s exactly what the MCU needs right now!

Although the X-Men won’t officially join the Marvel Cinematic Universe until Phase 7, Marvel Studios has started introducing mutants through the Multiverse Saga. We’ve seen actors from the old Fox X-Men movies return for appearances in projects like Deadpool & Wolverine and Avengers: Doomsday, giving them a final send-off before the series is reimagined. Plus, X-Men ’97 has brought back the beloved animated style of the original show after nearly thirty years.

Every Upcoming X-Men Movie and TV Series We Currently Know About

Jake Schreier’s X-Men Reboot

Everyone is eagerly awaiting Marvel Studios’ planned reboot of the X-Men, which is currently expected to be released in 2028 or beyond.

With directors and writers already on board, fans anticipate a fresh, younger team of X-Men will debut in Phase 7 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts, and Michael Lesslie, a writer for The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, are currently developing the reboot.

Although the new X-Men movie is still early in production, seven key details have emerged suggesting it will be a fresh and different approach to Marvel’s mutants compared to the films 20th Century Fox made for nearly twenty years.

Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool/X-Men Team-Up

Now that Deadpool & Wolverine has earned over $1 billion at the box office, Marvel Studios is planning several more films starring Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool.

In May, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Ryan Reynolds is starting to plan a new Marvel movie that would bring Deadpool together with three or four X-Men. It’s currently unknown if these X-Men will be the new versions introduced in the MCU, characters from the older Fox films, or a completely different group.

Plans are underway for a continuation of Deadpool & Wolverine, potentially as part of a larger story arc, but it’s still uncertain if and when it will happen.

Disney+’s X-Men ’97 Seasons 4 & 5

The popular Disney+ revival of X-Men: The Animated Series, titled X-Men ’97, will be back for a second season in Summer 2026. Marvel Animation’s Brad Winderbaum has also confirmed that they are already working on a third season.

Winderbaum shared that he’s already seen an episode from the 2027 season, and even better, discussions about Seasons 4 and 5 are already underway. If the show continues to be released yearly as planned, we can expect those new seasons in 2028 and 2029 as part of Phase 7.

Just because Marvel is discussing these projects doesn’t guarantee they’ll actually happen. However, these early conversations are a good sign, suggesting they’re considering continuing the X-Men story in a different universe alongside the new live-action movie.

Marvel Studios Is Likely Hiding More X-Men Movies & Disney+ Shows

Marvel Studios will likely introduce more stories focused on mutants in future phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with sequels to the new X-Men films. These stories could eventually lead to the introduction of the MCU’s next major villains.

Okay, let’s talk Gambit. Honestly, after the dust settled from Avengers: Doomsday, I figured Channing Tatum’s days as the mutant were numbered – recasting is always a possibility with these big franchises. But with all the buzz about Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds potentially continuing their roles into Phase 7, a little hope has sparked. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll finally get that Gambit solo movie everyone’s been waiting for. It’s a long shot, but the possibility is definitely there now.

Regarding the X-Men, while the main team will probably appear together in a series of films, individual mutants could definitely star in their own movies or Disney+ shows.

As a huge Wolverine fan, I was thrilled to see Hugh Jackman get a fantastic trilogy with Fox, especially that emotional Logan film. Now that Daniel Richtman is reporting Jackman might be back for more Marvel projects after Avengers: Secret Wars, I’m starting to dream about a possible fourth solo movie! It doesn’t seem so crazy anymore, and honestly, I’d be first in line to see it.

As of September 2024, early drafts of Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot don’t seem to include Wolverine. However, Marvel Studios will probably still want to feature the character in Phase 7 of the MCU, potentially with Hugh Jackman reprising the role or with a new actor.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe surprised fans by changing the backstory of Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan. Instead of being an Inhuman as in the comics, her show, Ms. Marvel, revealed she’s actually a mutant. While it’s unclear if her Disney+ series will return for a second season, she’s expected to appear in future Marvel projects, potentially as part of a team-up show similar to the Young Avengers.

Tenoch Huerta’s Namor is unlikely to get his own movie anytime soon. The rights to his character are shared with Universal, along with the rights to the Hulk, and this prevents Marvel Studios from creating solo films for him – he’s one of nine characters they currently can’t feature in a standalone project.
