Marvel Studios Just Recast a Historic MCU Superhero Actor as a New Character

Marvel Studios made headlines by casting a fresh actress in a dual role within their latest superhero production, marking a significant milestone in the franchise. Over the years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has featured an array of actors for various roles, many of them being A-list celebrities. With more than 50 movies and TV series forming this epic narrative, several stars have even portrayed multiple characters across this vast expanse.

In the upcoming Marvel Studios production titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, Natasha Lyonne will portray an original character named Rachel Rozman. Rachel is depicted as a school teacher who operates in Ben Grimm’s childhood neighborhood and the Jewish synagogue that Ben attends during the film’s final act. Despite having limited screen time, there are hints of a romantic connection between her and Ben.

Natasha Lyonne joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as the first actor to portray two unique characters within it. Previously, she lent her voice for the grown-up version of a character named Byrdie in “What If…?”, appearing in Season 3, episode 4. Byrdie is an exclusive creation for the MCU, being the hybrid offspring of Darcy Lewis (played by Kat Dennings) and Howard the Duck (Seth Green). This new character isn’t derived from comic book sources.

The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, titled “The Fantastic Four: Initial Leap,” stars Natasha Lyonne alongside Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. This marks the MCU’s first venture into Phase 6. Set in an alternate 1960s reality (Earth-828), the quartet find themselves on a mission to prevent Ralph Ineson’s Galactus from devouring their planet, thereby eradicating life as they understand it. “The Fantastic Four: Initial Leap” is now screening globally in cinemas.

Other MCU Stars Who Play Multiple Characters

Gemma Chan

In 2019’s “Captain Marvel,” Gemma Chan introduced herself to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Minn-Erva, a Kree sniper. Initially part of Carol Danvers’ squad of Kree soldiers, Minn-Erva eventually betrayed Danvers towards the end of the film when it was revealed that she had been deceiving her. This betrayal sent Minn-Erva pursuing Nick Fury and Maria Rambeau in her spaceship, culminating in a fatal confrontation between Rambeau and Minn-Erva when she was shot down by Rambeau’s fire.

Two years after his initial appearance in the MCU, Chan reappeared in 2021’s “Eternals,” this time stepping into the significant role of Sersi. As the lead character in this film, Sersi possesses an extraordinary ability to alter and reshape matter simply by touching it. She also serves as the emotional core of the team. Towards the end of the movie, Sersi, along with Phastos and Kingo, finds herself facing judgment by the Celestial Arishem.

Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch is widely recognized by Marvel Cinematic Universe fans as the actor portraying Doctor Stephen Strange, a proficient sorcerer versed in mystic arts and one of the universe’s strongest sorcerers. Since his debut in 2016’s Doctor Strange, he has played this role in seven MCU productions so far. Furthermore, he is anticipated to reprise his role as Doctor Strange in Avengers: Doomsday set for release in 2026, although an official confirmation of his appearance has yet to be made.

Furthermore, in the movie, Benedict Cumberbatch took on a double role, portraying the main antagonist, Dormammu. He skillfully provided both motion capture and voiceovers to bring this villain to reality. As the veteran actor of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he immersed himself in the sinister realm of the Dark Dimension for the critical showdown at the end of the film.

Paul Bettany

Paul Bettany has held the longest-running role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having debuted as Tony Stark’s AI system JARVIS in the 2008 movie “Iron Man.” Over several appearances (primarily within the Multiverse Saga), he provided the voice for both Tony and Iron Man suits, while offering crucial aid to Robert Downey Jr.’s character during his missions.

Beginning with “Avengers: Age of Ultron” in 2015, Paul Bettany took on the role of Vision. The digital assistant JARVIS was transferred into the android body initially designed for Ultron. He portrayed this character in a total of four productions, most recently in “WandaVision” in 2021, following Vision’s demise in “Avengers: Infinity War” in 2018. Bettany is slated to reprise his role as Vision in 2026, leading a standalone series on Disney+, titled “Vision Quest“.

Seth Green

Seth Green might not have many roles within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but his portrayal of Howard the Duck quickly earned him a massive fanbase. Making his debut in the post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy, he appeared in every film from the series and even had a silent cameo in Avengers: Endgame. Furthermore, Green played a more significant part in various episodes across the animated What If…? series.

Among all actors on this list, Green stands out because he’s the only one who portrayed himself in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In Iron Man 2 from 2010, there was a brief scene of Green appearing at the Stark Expo, which suggests that his real image and character were brought into the fictional world of Marvel.

Taika Waititi

Taika Waititi is not only recognized for his numerous directorial roles but also for breathing life into several unforgettable characters within his films. Among these, one particularly stands out – Korg, a warrior from Kronas who debuted as a gladiator on Sakaar. Korg has appeared in three Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies: Avengers: Endgame, the latest two Thor films, and the animated series What If…?. He frequently fights alongside Thor on the battlefield.

In “Thor: Love and Thunder,” Waititi depicts another character, Ninny the Nonny (a Kronan deity), during the gathering of the gods. Moreover, his face appears on one of the heads belonging to three-headed Hajo in “Thor: Ragnarok.”

In a more conversational tone, we could say: Waititi played another god character, Ninny the Nonny, in the assembly scene of the gods for “Thor: Love and Thunder”. He was also the face used for one of the heads on the three-headed Hajo in “Thor: Ragnarok.

Kenneth Choi

Kenneth Choi, known for his contributions to the series ‘911’, made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”. In this film and the initial episode of “Agents of SHIELD” Season 2, he portrayed Jim Morita. During World War II, Morita was a soldier with the Howling Commandos, who fought alongside Captain America as part of their team.

In the year 2017, during phase 3, Choi reprised his character in the movie “Spider-Man: Homecoming”. Here, he portrayed the role of Principal Morita, who was the grandson of Jim Morita.

Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh, who won an Academy Award, has been a significant part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2017, debuting in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”. Towards the end of that film and during one of its post-credits sequences, she portrayed Aleta Ogord, a key leader among the Ravagers alongside Sylvester Stallone’s character, Stakar Ogord.

In 2021, Yeoh re-joined Marvel for a character portrayal of Ying Nan in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings“. Ying Nan is Shang-Chi’s aunt from Ta Lo, who previously trained him in her martial arts techniques before the decisive confrontation with his father, known as the Mandarin.

David Dastmalchian

Initially, David Dastmalchian gained recognition within the Marvel Cinematic Universe through parts in the initial two “Ant-Man” movies. In these films, he portrayed Kurt, a Russian hacker, who was initially part of Scott Lang’s gang of criminals but later transitioned to work with X-Con Security Consultants, shifting from a criminal background to a more honorable role.

In the 2023 film “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania”, actor Dastmalchian transformed into a fresh character named Veb. This peculiar, pink, gelatinous being was a member of the Freedom Fighters. His unique bodily secretions were instrumental in deciphering the language spoken by residents of the Quantum Realm (for additional details about Veb, check out our exclusive interview with Dastmalchian on TopMob here).

Damion Poitier

In 2012, Damion Poitier first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the movie “The Avengers”. During the post-credits scene, he stood in for Thanos, the Mad Titan, without saying a word but gave an ominous smile to the camera. This interaction occurred when The Other mentioned that challenging Earth was inviting death.

In 2016, Poitier appeared in the film “Captain America: Civil War” in a lesser role, portraying one of Crossbones’ associates during a mission in Lagos, Nigeria. During an encounter with Black Widow, Redwing – Falcon’s drone – eliminated him while he was carrying a vital biological sample that Crossbones was seeking to acquire.
