Although it doesn’t feature any previously seen MCU heroes, Wonder Man is packed with nods and hidden references to the wider Marvel universe.
The show cleverly addresses fan concerns about the new Captain America, Sam Wilson, when Simon mentions him during his mother’s birthday. He jokes that Sam is “just a regular dude who can throw a shield,” which directly acknowledges the criticism some fans have had since Sam took over the role from Steve Rogers.
In his recent roles as Captain America – in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the upcoming film Captain America: Brave New World – Anthony Mackie’s character has faced skepticism about his ability to fill the role. The movie might show Sam defeating a major villain on his own, proving he’s up to the task and silencing any remaining doubts.
The best way for Marvel to prove Sam Wilson deserves to be Captain America—both to the audience and to characters within the Marvel universe, like Wonder Man—is by bringing Chris Evans back as Steve Rogers. The teaser for Avengers: Doomsday showed Evans’ character identified by his name, Steve Rogers, instead of his superhero title, Captain America.
If Chris Evans truly won’t reprise his role as Captain America in the next Avengers film, it will confirm Marvel’s commitment to Sam Wilson as the new Captain America. Moreover, even with Steve Rogers around, Sam should lead the Avengers team he’s assembling – potentially even giving Steve orders. This would demonstrate strong leadership and address any criticism the Marvel Cinematic Universe has received regarding its handling of the Captain America character.
