Marvel Studios Omits 2 Major Avengers: Doomsday Teams From 4 Trailers

The trailers for Avengers: Doomsday didn’t feature two important groups of heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios released four brief teasers for the film over several weeks in December and January, first in theaters and then online. The teasers started with the release of Avatar: Fire & Ash and included the exciting news that Chris Evans would reprise his role as Captain America. Subsequent teasers highlighted Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, the return of the X-Men (previously from Fox), and the upcoming team-up of Wakanda, Talokan, and the Fantastic Four.

At a recent event in Italy, Disney officially announced the six main teams for its upcoming projects: the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, Wakandans, and a team led by Doctor Doom. Although Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t featured as Doctor Doom and the Thunderbolts weren’t in the four preview trailers released, there are likely good explanations for why they were left out.

The first four trailers for Doomsday feel like the post-credit scenes these characters deserved. They mimic the classic “will return” message frequently used at the end of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.

The New Avengers already had a hint of a major threat, similar to ‘Doomsday,’ shown after the credits of the Thunderbolts movie. Plus, fans have already seen a preview of the former Thunderbolts in Avengers 5, so reminding them of their return so soon isn’t needed.

One reason these characters aren’t featured as much could just be that they aren’t as well-known as heroes like Captain America, Thor, the X-Men, Black Panther’s Wakandans, or the Fantastic Four. Plus, after the Thunderbolts movie underperformed despite positive reviews, investing heavily in promoting them might not be as worthwhile as promoting more popular franchises.

Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom is arguably the most exciting part of the upcoming movie, but fans already got a brief glimpse of him in a scene after the credits of a 2025 film. The Fantastic Four: First Steps gave audiences a first look at Doctor Doom’s costume in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and hinted at a surprising link between him and Franklin Richards, which will be important in the story to come.

Although Marvel Studios hasn’t revealed Robert Downey Jr.’s villain for the Avengers movies yet, many fans believe Doctor Doom was subtly featured throughout the trailers, continuing Marvel’s tradition of cleverly misleading previews.

Let me tell you, the cast of Doomsday is seriously impressive. The trailers alone showcased some huge names – Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and the legendary Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. Plus, you’ve got James Marsden, Letitia Wright, Tenoch Huerta, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach rounding out a truly stellar group. They really assembled a powerhouse for this one!

What To Expect Next From Avengers: Doomsday’s Trailer Campaign

By casting Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Marvel Studios is likely trying to recapture the enthusiasm of fans who haven’t been as engaged with their recent movies, hoping his popularity will draw audiences to Avengers: Doomsday.

Early speculation suggested Doctor Doom would be a major focus of the final trailer for the upcoming Doomsday movie. However, that didn’t happen. The studio is probably holding back the full reveal for a larger event, and will likely show new footage from Avengers 5 during the Super Bowl in February.

Marvel Studios is expected to generate a lot of excitement at the Super Bowl, reinforcing their message that 2026 will be the year of Doomsday and a new era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While fans are eager for a full trailer, it’s likely too soon – ten months before the movie’s release. Instead, Marvel might release something similar to the short teaser campaign they’ve used before, but this time finally revealing Doctor Doom.

Disney and Marvel will probably continue building excitement for Doomsday throughout the year. They might even use the release of the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie in 2026 to remind audiences that Doomsday is coming soon. A trailer could be revealed at San Diego Comic-Con in July and shown in theaters with the Spider-Man film.
