Marvel Studios Releases First Look at Its 2nd Scorpion Costume

The costume for Scorpion in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been unveiled, but this isn’t Marvel Studios‘ first try at bringing the villain to life. Fans have been eager to see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man face off against Michael Mando’s Mac Gargan – a matchup hinted at in Spider-Man: Homecoming – for nine years. Mando’s character has been in prison since Homecoming, patiently waiting to wear Scorpion’s classic costume, and that moment is almost here.

The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been released, giving fans a great look at Michael Mando – known for his role in Better Call Saul – as the villain Scorpion (Mac Gargan). Scorpion appeared in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Season 1 with a different costume, but we’ll discuss that another time.

The popular Marvel movie shows Mac Gargan getting a powerful, armored suit, which he’ll obtain after escaping from a special prison run by Damage Control.

As a huge cinema fan, I’m really excited to see Scorpion back in action! Apparently, he’s been released from prison and is seeking revenge on Spider-Man – Tom Holland’s version, specifically – because Spidey was responsible for getting him arrested almost ten years ago. It’s going to be a thrilling showdown!

Marvel Studios showed off Scorpion’s new costume from Brand New Day in promotional images released before the trailer. The suit, worn by Mac Gargan, is a brighter, more armored design – a style often seen in Marvel movies.

While Brand New Day might be showing Scorpion in his first fully realistic suit, Marvel Studios isn’t a stranger to the villain – and they’ve featured him beyond just Homecoming.

In the first season of Disney+’s Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Scorpion appeared wearing a high-tech suit he purchased from Doc Ock (Otto Octavius), a former Oscorp scientist and weapons dealer.

Jonathan Mediana provided the voice for Gargan, who relied on an exosuit bought from Octavius as his main weapon during the conflict between the Scorpions and the 110th Street Gang. At this time, Lonnie Lincoln, known as Tombstone, was becoming a powerful figure within the gang.

It’s notable that both Scorpion and Tombstone will be involved in two separate Spider-Man projects this year: Season 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. What’s even more interesting is that Tombstone is scheduled to appear in three different projects in 2026, each time portrayed by a different actor and version of the character.

The two Scorpion suits created by Marvel Studios share a similar look, both featuring heavy armor. It’s currently unknown if Scorpion will also receive a mask to match his updated suit in Brand New Day.

In Marvel Comics, his robotic tail has served many purposes over the years, sometimes functioning as a dangerous weapon that can deliver acid or venom.

The Scorpion suit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe looks much more like a realistic, military-style exoskeleton compared to its comic book versions. This design choice suggests the upcoming movie will have a more down-to-earth and gritty feel.

The long-awaited showdown between Michael Mando’s Scorpion and Spider-Man will arrive in theaters on July 31 with the new film, Brand New Day, which also stars Tom Holland, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, and Trammell Tillman. Fans can also look forward to the return of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man for a second season on Disney+ this fall.

How Does Scorpion Fit Into Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

It’s still unclear who created Scorpion’s exoskeleton in the main Marvel universe (Earth-616), and it probably wasn’t Otto Octavius like before. One possibility is Michael Charnus returning as Phineas Mason, also known as the Tinkerer. He previously built high-tech equipment for the Vulture and hasn’t been seen since.

The movie Brand New Day is adding more villains to the mix alongside Scorpion, even some less famous ones like Boomerang and Tarantula. This makes you wonder if their tech and Scorpion’s escape from prison are all connected to the movie’s main villain, who remains a mystery.

Scorpion follows a pattern established by the Spider-Man movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: introducing villains we haven’t seen on screen before (with Spider-Man: No Way Home being the exception). However, Marvel Studios will probably want to keep the two versions of Scorpion and their stories unique, meaning we likely won’t see another conflict with Tombstone.

So far, there’s no sign that Scorpion will be the main villain in Brand New Day. We still don’t know how much he’ll actually appear in the story. Fans are guessing his escape from prison will happen early in Spider-Man 4, and the fight with his exoskeleton suit will probably come much later, judging by the differences in lighting and location shown in available materials.
