Marvel Studios Reveals Phase 6’s Historic Time Jump

Marvel Studios has set a new record on Disney+ by launching the first series of Phase 6 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). After concluding Phase 5 with “Thunderbolts” and “Ironheart,” the second chapter of the MCU is now reaching its climax, as Phase 6 commences. The third act of the Multiverse Saga started with “The Fantastic: First Steps” in theaters and continued on Disney+ with “Eyes of Wakanda,” both taking place in the past. Upcoming Phase 6 releases include “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” “Avengers: Doomsday,” “Secret Wars,” “Wonder Man,” “Vision Quest,” Season 2 of “Daredevil: Born Again,” a special Disney+ presentation for The Punisher, and many more exciting installments in the MCU.

Before debuting Marvel Studios’ first Phase 6 series on Disney+, “Eyes of Wakanda,” they announced it would break franchise history by delving into the oldest period ever depicted in an MCU streaming production. With the release of the four animated tales within the “Black Panther” spin-off, we now know that “Eyes of Wakanda” has indeed shattered another record, leaping further back in time than any other MCU series on Disney+.

The visual narrative of “Wakanda’s Eyes” leaps forward in time between its four chapters, spanning from 1260 BC to 1896 AD. This results in a storyline that traverses an astonishing 3,129 years, setting a new benchmark for the largest time gap covered in any Marvel Cinematic Universe series on Disney+.

  • Episode 1, “Into the Lion’s Den” – 1260 BC
  • Episode 2, “Legends and Lies” – 1200 BC
  • Episode 3, “Lost and Found” – 1400 AD
  • Episode 4, “The Last Panther” – 1896 AD

Earlier, the longest timeframe for a Marvel Cinematic Universe series on Disney+ was seen in the show “Agatha All Along“, where the main events took place in the year 2027, but it also delved into the past to reveal the roots of the Witches’ Road legend, covering approximately 277 years.

Although “The Eyes of Wakanda” on Disney+ spans the most time among its series, it doesn’t hold the record for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as a whole. That title is still held by “Eternals,” which chronicles a whopping 7000-year timeline, from when Arishem dispatched the ten Eternals to Earth, all the way to Tiamut’s attempted emergence in contemporary times.

It’s possible to contend that Loki shattered this record, given that the two-season series travels from Pompeii in 79 AD right up to the End of Time. However, it’s important to note that this isn’t a typical scenario since most of its action unfolds within the TVA (a temporal entity outside of the timeline), and its time jumps are orchestrated through time travel.

In the course of its four time leaps, the viewers of “Eyes of Wakanda” were introduced to various heroic characters portrayed by Winnie Harlow, Larry Herron, Jacques Colimon, Steve Toussaint, and Zeke Alton. The MCU’s latest addition from the DC Arrowverse, Cress Williams, joined the cast as a significant new antagonist in the Disney+ series.

Marvel Studios Already Time Jumped to Phase 6’s Grand Finale

Instead of jumping straight to the future, Phase 5’s last installment, as far as cinema is concerned, concluded with a time leap. This set the stage for the Thunderbolts, now known as the New AvengerZ, appearing 14 months later in a post-credit scene, following their joint movie.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I must confess that my anticipation for the clash between the New AvengerZ and Sam Wilson’s team was already palpable. However, things took an unexpected turn when, right before this anticipated confrontation, Earth-616 witnessed a catastrophic event – the arrival of the Fantastic Four, who were here to tackle a cosmic crisis that would later become the centerstage in Avengers: Doomsday.

In the context of movies, by around late 2027, the events of Phase 5’s blockbuster unfolded. This time leap could position Doomsday somewhere in late 2028 or early 2029, thereby propelling the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) slightly further ahead, with reasons for this advancement remaining uncertain. Fans are eagerly anticipating that the Thunderbolts will make their appearance during the post-credit scene of Avengers 5, which could mark Doctor Doom’s entrance into the storyline.
