Marvel Studios Reverses Course, Confirms 2 Avengers Movies Releasing In 2026

Following multiple changes to its upcoming movie plans, Marvel Studios has once again adjusted its schedule, adding a new film for 2026. “Avengers: Doomsday” is expected to be a massive release, and marks a strategic shift for Marvel, as it will be released right before Christmas.

As a huge Marvel fan, I was thrilled to hear that Marvel Studios is bringing Avengers: Endgame back to cinemas on September 25, 2026! It’s happening ahead of the release of Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026, and honestly, it’s a brilliant move. Having two Avengers movies in theaters next year is a fantastic way to get everyone excited for Avengers 5 – consider my hype officially built!

Marvel Studios originally intended to release two Avengers movies in the same year. When plans for Avengers 5 and 6 were first revealed, The Kang Dynasty (which is now called Doomsday) and Secret Wars were scheduled to come out on May 2, 2025, and November 7, 2025, respectively.

A lot has evolved since the original plans for the next Avengers movies. The fifth Avengers film has been completely revamped and will feature the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, with the Russo Brothers directing. The sequel, currently called Secret Wars, is set to be released on December 17, 2027.

The upcoming Avengers movies are facing even more scrutiny after Disney cancelled a planned Marvel film for July 2027. Marvel Studios has now confirmed that there will be a year-long gap between the releases of “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” with no other Marvel movies in theaters during that time – a first for the franchise.

Marvel Studios is handling theatrical re-releases differently leading up to the new Avengers movie. Before Avengers: Endgame came out in 2019, Marvel celebrated its 10th anniversary with a huge film festival that brought all 20 movies back to IMAX theaters – and even showed some for the first time, playing them in order from the original Iron Man. It was a way to get fans excited and remember everything that had happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This time around, Marvel appears to be taking a more low-key approach.

As a huge movie fan, it really makes sense to me why they’d look back to Endgame for inspiration in 2026. It still feels like the last time a lot of people – even those who don’t usually follow superhero movies – all went to see a Marvel film together, right before everything shut down with COVID. Spider-Man: No Way Home was close behind, but Endgame really felt like a cultural moment.

The Multiverse Saga hasn’t been a big success in theaters lately, and many recent Marvel films haven’t done well. Re-releasing older movies probably wouldn’t help much now. However, Endgame is especially important for Avengers: Doomsday – it was the last big Avengers film, and rumors suggest its ending will be the main reason for the conflict in the new movie.

Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America (Chris Evans), chose to remain in the past with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), and this decision is said to have caused significant problems for the Multiverse. It reportedly created instability similar to incursions, which then attracted the attention of Doctor Doom.

Since Doomsday directly continues the story of Endgame, Marvel might not see much point in re-releasing any other older films. Plus, with over seven years having passed since the end of the Infinity Saga, fans might be experiencing fond memories and be happy revisiting a beloved cinematic experience.

Can Endgame Save the Multiverse Saga?

The return of the Russo brothers and Robert Downey Jr. signaled Marvel President Kevin Feige’s intention to recapture past box office success with projects planned for 2026.

Integrating Endgame into the Doomsday narrative is a brilliant decision. While fans might debate whether it’s the best creative choice, bringing back Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., alongside Chris Hemsworth, really feels like a return to Marvel’s golden age.

Recent Marvel Cinematic Universe projects like Thunderbolts, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Loki are crucial to the overall story. Even though bringing back familiar faces from the multiverse – like the X-Men or Steve Rogers – is exciting, the main story now focuses on these new teams and storylines.

The movie Thunderbolts introduces a new team of Avengers made up of characters who first appeared after Endgame. Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, has evolved from a mischievous thief to a key figure responsible for maintaining the stability of the multiverse. The upcoming Doomsday story will focus on the Fantastic Four, particularly Sue Storm, Reed Richards, and their son Franklin.

Marvel’s big challenge for 2026 is to create content that both rewards longtime fans who’ve followed the Multiverse Saga closely, and also attracts viewers who enjoyed the Marvel movies from the 2010s.
