With the release of Arc System Works’ Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls – the first major Marvel fighting game in years following Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite – Marvel Games is aiming to re-establish itself as a key player in the fighting game scene. Haluk Mentes, general manager of Marvel Games, discussed this goal in a GameInformer interview, highlighting Marvel’s rich history with fighting games and how Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls fits into their future plans.
Mentes explained that Marvel Games specifically chose to collaborate with Arc System Works because of the developer’s unique style – particularly its anime-influenced art and expertise in tag-team fighting games. They wanted to leverage Arc System Works’ distinctive approach to create Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls.
Mentes shared their excitement about the collaboration with ArcSys and PlayStation, calling it a dream come true. The team set out to re-establish Marvel as a major force in the fighting game world, using a distinctive anime art style and top-tier tag-team gameplay. From the beginning, they focused on innovative design to ensure the game felt uniquely like an ArcSys title. Mentes highlighted Iron Man’s design as a prime example – both fresh and instantly familiar. The team is very proud of Marvel Tōkon and believes players will love it when it releases next year.
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls was first shown in June and is being created for PC and PlayStation 5. The game is a 4-on-4 tag-team fighter, meaning players will choose teams of four characters. It will feature a diverse roster of heroes and villains from Marvel comics, including Star Lord, Ghost Rider, Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Captain America, Storm, and Dr. Doom.
A new trailer released in August gave us a better look at the fighting game. It showed that battles begin with two players on each side, but things quickly change. Players can cause the stage to shift by throwing opponents or landing certain special moves in specific areas, and these transitions bring in even more fighters to join the battle.
In Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, players need to manage three main gauges during battles: the Vital Gauge, which represents health; the Assemble Gauge, which powers up team attacks; and the Skill Gauge, which allows for more powerful versions of regular moves.
Arc System Works announced they’re committed to supporting Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls for the next decade, with the goal of making it the best possible fighting game experience.
The most recent Marvel fighting game, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, came out in 2017. However, it wasn’t as well-received as the previous installment, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. A major reason was its smaller selection of characters, which initially left out many fan favorites like the X-Men. The game’s story mode was also considered lackluster, and the fighting itself felt less complex compared to other team-based fighting games.
