Marvel is revisiting the origins of the Fantastic Four with a new comic book series called First Foes, which continues the storyline established in Fantastic Four: First Steps. Now that the team has officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after appearing in a film this summer, they’re becoming a key part of the franchise. The Fantastic Four will also be featured in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, where they’ll join forces with the Avengers to fight the villainous Doctor Doom.
Good news for fans eager to see more of the Fantastic Four! Marvel is already planning another story featuring the team. TopMob has learned that Marvel Studios and Marvel Comics are creating a new comic book prequel to the upcoming 2025 film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. This one-time adventure, called Fantastic Four: First Foes, will show the movie version of the team fighting the villain known as the Mad Thinker.
The comic First Foes will be released on March 4, 2026. It’s a new, action-packed story written by Dan Slott, a longtime Marvel writer known for his work on titles like Fantastic Four, Spider-Boy, and Amazing Spider-Man. Mark Buckingham, who previously worked on the interiors of Fantastic Four, is providing the artwork, and Phil Noto, also known for his Fantastic Four covers, is designing the cover for this special standalone issue.
Set in an alternate reality (Earth-828), First Foes will be presented as if it’s a publication from the Future Foundation. The story takes place before the events of the 2025 blockbuster movie, but after the Fantastic Four have already become well-known heroes.
The official logline for the project notes the comic’s villain as well, the Mad Thinker:
As the Fantastic Four gain fame as heroes, the Mad Thinker becomes obsessed with proving himself and decides to use the futuristic city against them!
The Mad Thinker made a very brief appearance in First Steps. You can spot his name on a newspaper during the opening scene, which takes place on a talk show set.
One of the coolest things about this comic, beyond the main storyline with the Mad Thinker, is a special two-page strip styled after the in-universe educational show Reed Richards hosts. It’s written by the current Fantastic Four writer, Ryan North, and it really captures the spirit of that show – think a fun, informative little break from the action!
The comic book Fantastic Four: First Foes is the first of four stories planned for release throughout 2026. These stories will all take place within the same universe as the upcoming movie and will build upon characters and events introduced in First Steps.
Following the release of the Marvel one-shot comic Fantastic Four: First Steps earlier this year, First Foes was created in collaboration with Marvel Comics’ editors and the producers of the upcoming MCU film.
