Marvel has explored many types of games, from action-packed adventures like Marvel’s Spider-Man to team-based shooters like Marvel Rivals. Despite this, a true role-playing game (RPG) set within the Marvel Comics universe has been missing, with Marvel’s Midnight Suns being the closest attempt so far. This is surprising, considering the rich history and characters of Marvel offer a perfect foundation for an RPG experience.
As we anticipate the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine game, it’s worth considering which characters Marvel frequently features in its video games. Spider-Man has consistently appeared in games over the years, while characters like Iron Man and Daredevil have only recently gained prominence in games thanks to their increased popularity from movies and TV shows. Now, with one Marvel property experiencing a resurgence thanks to a successful animated series revival, it feels like the perfect time for a game starring one of the company’s classic heroes.
An X-Men RPG Could Allow Players To Create Their Own Mutant For Superhero Adventures

It’s surprising that no one has made an X-Men role-playing game yet, because the setting – Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters – is perfect for creating your own mutant hero within the Marvel universe. Imagine choosing mutant abilities through RPG classes to build a truly unique character, opening up all sorts of different gameplay options. A game like Baldur’s Gate 3 could be a great model – you’d assemble a team of gifted individuals and face challenges together.
The game doesn’t need a huge roster of X-Men characters. Instead, it could feature the most famous ones as mentors, guiding your player character. If the game used classes, a strong character could learn from heroes like Colossus or Wolverine. Simply having interactions with well-known X-Men while you develop your own mutant’s powers would be enough to make the game appealing.
This type of RPG could also let you play with friends, forming a small team or “party.” While an X-Men RPG doesn’t need to copy the rules of games like Mass Effect or Final Fantasy, borrowing successful elements from those titles could create a solid base. With its rich characters and storylines, an X-Men RPG has the potential to be one of the best Marvel games ever made.
Different Titles In Other Universes Already Show Immersive World Building With Custom Characters In Popular IPs

An X-Men role-playing game could work well as a massively multiplayer online game, much like DC Universe Online. That game lets you create your own character and place them within the established comic book world. Star Wars: The Old Republic takes this a step further, allowing your choices to shape your character’s personality and story. Both games successfully blend familiar elements from their source material with new characters and narratives, offering a respectful yet creative experience.
Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 successfully translated the rules of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing game into a video game. A similar approach could work well for an X-Men RPG. The Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game already exists and even has an expansion focused entirely on the X-Men, providing a solid foundation for adventures within the Marvel universe. The rules and systems from this tabletop game could be adapted to create an X-Men video game with consistent gameplay.
Over 63 Years Of X-Men Stories Could Create A Nearly Endless Game For Marvel Fans

A game featuring the X-Men would offer a refreshing change of pace from the typical Marvel games and could offer a massive amount of content. The X-Men have decades of rich history in comics, providing countless storylines for a game, with even more material available for expansions, updates, and sequels. Iconic events like “E is for Extinction” or “Days of Future Past” could serve as the setting for personal stories centered around player-created characters.
With all the hype around potentially seeing X-Men characters in the new Wolverine game from Insomniac, it’s pretty clear players are craving more mutant action in new games. Honestly, an X-Men RPG could be amazing, but it would take a really bold developer and a ton of support from Marvel to do the team – and all those iconic heroes and villains – justice. It’d have to be done right!
