In the original script for “Captain America: Brave New World”, Marvel Studios intended to introduce a comic book character as a villain. This character was featured in promotional merchandise for the movie but was ultimately cut from the final version of the film, despite her intriguing design potentially enhancing the movie.
The book “Marvel Studio’s Captain America: Brave New World – The Art of the Movie” showcases various costume concepts for the character Diamondback, portrayed by actress Rosa Salazar (known from “Alita: Battle Angel”). In the 2025 film, Diamondback is intended to be a female adversary for Captain America. Similar to her comic book counterpart, Diamondback was once part of the Serpent Society, a villainous group initially considered for “Captain America: Civil War”. It’s also anticipated that in this adaptation, Diamondback would have played an antagonistic role with potential romantic connections to Sam Wilson’s Captain.
The recently unveiled concept artwork demonstrates the design for Diamondback in “Captain America: Brave New World” as a fusion of comic book influences, reptilian elements mirroring the Serpent Society (explore their rumored role in “Captain America 4” here), and inventive yet practical artistic decisions. An example is a design featuring Rachel Leighton in a dark, streamlined tactical suit, which gives her a more realistic appearance for “Captain America 4”.
As stated in “The Art of the Movie” book, the appearance of Rosa Salazar’s Diamondback suit is closely related to the daggers she throws and was tailored to fit the slightly more technologically advanced aesthetic of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) world. However, in order to maintain her comic book image, she continues to sport her distinctive pink hair.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve stumbled upon some fascinating sketches that delve into ways to merge the character’s Diamondback persona and her connections to the Serpent Society. These designs even include creative gas mask concepts. Marvel Studios’ art director, Michael Uwandi, even pondered an intriguing idea where her futuristic helmet resembles the snake-haired Gorgon of Greek mythology, complete with tentacle-like wires.
An alternative method to emphasize her serpent-like aesthetic was incorporating tattoos that hinted at sharp teeth or scaly patterns. Uwandi mentioned that certain tattoos might have depicted internal wiring as part of the design, implying they had a function beyond mere aesthetics.
Additionally, concepts emerged for her Serpent Society mask to be derived from her facial tattoos, resulting in a transparent yet textured pattern resembling snake scales across her face.
In essence, the design for Diamondback’s “Captain America 4” had the potential to be imaginatively bold, technologically advanced, and undeniably reminiscent of the Serpent Society, all while maintaining a connection to the original comic book persona.
In the film “Captain America: Brave New World,” Diamondback was eventually cut out, but earlier merchandise did feature her as Rosa Salazar’s character from the Serpent Society, sporting pink hair and a costume that resembled the one from the comic books more closely.
As a die-hard fan, I was thrilled to catch the premiere of “Captain America: Brave New World” gracing the big screen on Valentine’s Day, 2025. This incredible film marked another exciting chapter in Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and continued Anthony Mackie’s extraordinary journey as The Falcon. In this thrilling installment, directed by Julius Onah, Mackie’s hero uncovers a sinister conspiracy involving none other than President Thaddeus Ross, skillfully portrayed by the legendary Harrison Ford. Can’t wait to see what happens next!
Why Did Marvel Cut Diamondback From Captain America 4?
In the creation of “Captain America: Brave New World,” numerous script adjustments and additional filming were carried out during production. Regrettably, Diamondback was a character who fell victim to the creative hurdles faced along the way by Marvel Studios. It seems her elimination from the final cut was probably due to the existing lengthy cast list, and the desire to maintain a clear narrative focus on the battle between President Ross, played by Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader (whose powers included an unappealing aspect), and Sam Wilson’s Captain America.
As a die-hard movie fan, I must say that Marvel Studios did an admirable job of introducing a hint of the Serpent Society in their latest production, with Giancarlo Esposito playing Sidewinder, the head of a covert operations squad known as Serpent. Whether we’ll see Rachel Leighton gracing the MCU screens anytime soon remains to be seen. However, based on the imaginative artwork that has been released, it’s evident that Marvel artists recognized significant potential in this complex character, despite her not being suitable for this particular film.
