The Marvel Cinematic Universe has generally been very successful, but not every Marvel movie released recently has been a hit. This is especially true for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. While films like Venom (2018) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) performed well, others haven’t. The franchise has faced several critical and commercial failures, and one film particularly stands out as a major disappointment – but now, at least, you’ll be able to watch it from home.
Starting March 1st, you can watch Morbius on Tubi. While many might think of Madame Web when it comes to Sony’s Spider-Man movies, it’s actually the 2022 film starring Jared Leto that’s becoming available to stream for free. Despite having a potentially interesting character and concept, Morbius became more known as a movie people jokingly criticize than a successful blockbuster.
Morbius Might Be The Biggest Joke of a Marvel Movie Yet (But It Least It Became a Meme)
In the movie Morbius, Jared Leto plays Dr. Michael Morbius, a doctor suffering from a rare blood disorder. He tries a risky experiment to cure himself, but it accidentally turns him into a dangerous, vampire-like creature. The film mainly focuses on how this transformation unleashes a darker side of the doctor and the resulting consequences. Essentially, it’s about a doctor experimenting on himself, becoming a strange vampire, and facing the fallout. The cast also includes Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson.
Let’s be honest, Morbius wasn’t a good movie. It received a very low 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and only earned $167.5 million worldwide despite costing around $80 million to make. However, its poor quality actually ended up helping it gain attention in a strange way. Because critics and audiences disliked almost everything about it – the story, acting, special effects, and even the post-credit scenes – the film became a popular online joke. People started ironically praising it, turning Morbius into a meme. This unexpected attention led to the movie being re-released in theaters in June 2022, though that second release also didn’t perform well.
The movie remains popular online, continuing to appear in memes and on social media. It’s also gaining a dedicated following and could become a cult classic. Recently, it was trending on Prime Video shortly after becoming available for streaming, suggesting it might have a lasting impact beyond its initial meme status.
Morbius lands on Tubi on March 1st.
