Marvel Studios is trying something different with how they’re promoting their next movie. Instead of a traditional trailer, they’re releasing four short clips alongside the new Avatar: Fire and Ash film in theaters. Each week, a new clip will give fans a peek into Avengers: Doomsday. Many expected the first clips to reveal the main villain, Doctor Doom, or show who will be in the new Avengers team. But reports suggest that’s not the plan – Marvel is taking a slower approach to building excitement.
The initial trailer for Doomsday starts with a man biking home, appearing relaxed after a ride. He enters his house and grabs a well-known costume, revealing himself to be Steve Rogers, Captain America. This confirms Chris Evans is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will likely have a significant part in Doomsday. While fans should be excited about this—Evans’ Captain America is incredibly popular—it actually signals a worrying trend, suggesting the franchise is giving up on fresh ideas.
Captain America’s MCU Return Isn’t Happening Because It’s the Right Time

The epic conclusion of Avengers: Endgame features a final, decisive battle between Earth’s heroes and Thanos’s forces. Just when Thanos thinks he’s winning, Tony Stark cleverly takes the Infinity Stones from his gauntlet and uses them to eliminate Thanos and his army, securing victory for the Avengers. However, this win comes with a heartbreaking price: Tony Stark’s life. After mourning their friend, Steve Rogers chooses to retire. He returns the Infinity Stones to where they belong and finally gets to live a life with Peggy Carter. Years later, he travels back to the time he left and passes on his Captain America shield to Sam Wilson, bringing his journey to a close.
It looks like Steve Rogers will be involved in the upcoming battle to save the multiverse after all. While the preview doesn’t show how he returns, many believe Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Doom, will be the reason, setting up a conflict between them. Steve will likely be motivated to defend the memory of a friend, especially with a villain who resembles him appearing. This could satisfy fans who just want to see a good fight. However, it’s more complicated than that, considering Marvel has been working for six years to introduce and focus on a new group of heroes.
All of the MCU’s New Heroes Are Already Being Sidelined

It would have been easier to get people excited about the movie if it had been presented from the start as a battle between Captain America and Doctor Doom, but that didn’t happen. The announcement video spent a lot of time listing everyone involved in the production. While the actors playing the Fantastic Four and New Avengers were mentioned, the original X-Men cast from Fox got more attention. Many people thought the newer characters would have minor roles, essentially existing to be defeated by Doom. However, the recent teaser suggests Marvel Studios is willing to take a backseat to those characters and focus on the older ones from Phases Four and Five.
Shang-Chi quickly joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Endgame, and fans have been eager to see more of his story. He’ll be part of the Doomsday film, alongside characters like Shuri and Namor, all of whom are ready for their next big role. These characters have just as much promise as early MCU heroes like Captain America and Iron Man, but they’re being overshadowed after already having established storylines. While it’s understandable that Marvel relies on proven successes, they don’t seem to be exploring the full potential of their other characters.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
