Following numerous rumors, the infamous Marvel antagonist Mephisto officially entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the Disney+ series “Ironheart”. British actor and humorist Sacha Baron Cohen portrayed the devilish Mephisto with style and constant peril, striking a deal with Riri Williams in the show’s final episode. Now, fans are abuzz, brainstorming where this demon might resurface next and which Marvel hero will be his next target. In a recent roundtable discussion for the upcoming MCU release, “Fantastic Four: First Steps”, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige hinted that we can expect to see more of Cohen as Mephisto in future projects.
Feige previously expressed his initial doubts about incorporating a cosmic entity such as Mephisto in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, admitting he wasn’t certain about how to introduce a character like Mephisto within the realm of superheroes. Essentially, he pondered, “How do you handle a character that embodies evil?
Initially introduced as a comic book character in issue #3 of Silver Surfer in 1968, Mephisto later joined the Marvel Universe in Ironheart. Throughout the years, he’s played significant parts in stories involving characters such as Ghost Rider, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and even the villainous Doctor Doom from the Fantastic Four. Due to his history with Scarlet Witch, fans speculated about Mephisto appearing in WandaVision back in 2021, a theory that caught Feige’s attention.
Feige clarified that he wasn’t involved in “WandaVision,” mirroring statements made by the show’s creators and later its spinoff, “Agatha All Along.” However, he found it exciting and entertaining to see theories about his potential role circulating online.
Feige Confirms More Mephisto in MCU
Feige affirmatively replied that they do have intentions to incorporate Mephisto further into their stories; yet, he chose not to reveal specific details about how this might happen. “Mephisto played a significant role in Thanos’ comic book storyline. Given his presence now, the possibilities are evident.
Despite Thanos’ demise within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is a possibility that we could encounter Mephisto once more as early as next year in a Marvel production. The earliest appearance might be in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” scheduled for release next summer. In the comics, Mephisto played a significant role in the contentious “One More Day” storyline, where Peter Parker made a deal with him to save Aunt May at the cost of erasing his marriage to Mary Jane from existence and restoring his secret identity. If Peter and Mary Jane are not a couple, they cannot produce Mephisto’s adversary.
In a potential scenario for 2026’s “Avengers: Doomsday”, Mephisto might find himself intertwined with the plot due to his past dealings with Victor von Doom’s mother, Cynthia. As a powerful Romani sorceress, Cynthia struck a pact with Mephisto for vengeance against her oppressors. However, Mephisto failed to disclose that for every life she claimed, a child’s life would also be taken. Stricken with horror, she renounced her power but was ultimately mortally wounded. In the 1989 Marvel graphic novel “Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment”, Victor sought aid from Doctor Strange to release Cynthia from Mephisto’s domain into a more benign afterlife. Though Doctor Doom may not be a primary character in “Avengers: Doomsday”, Mephisto’s historical ties to Doom could warrant a brief appearance by Cohen in the film. If not, there are still numerous routes for Mephisto to reappear on screen in a sinister manner.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters Friday, July 25th.
