As Marvel’s original Ultimate Universe ends, some characters were always going to be removed. While many expected losses, it was surprising to see Nick Fury (who had become corrupted by the Hand) be the first to go. Even more shocking was who defeated him – a well-known member of the Avengers who hadn’t yet appeared in this new version of the Ultimate Universe.
Let me tell you, Ultimates #19, penned by Deniz Camp with stunning art from Juan Frigeri, really digs into Janet Van Dyne, a.k.a. The Wasp’s, complicated situation. We already knew she’d gone undercover, working for Nick Fury while being one of the Ultimates – a seriously risky move! This issue picks up with her having turned herself in to the HAND, and, shockingly, she’s brought her husband, Hank Pym, along with her. It’s a bold move that throws the two groups into all-out war, and honestly, I’m hooked to see how this plays out.
In Ultimates #19, flashbacks explain why Wasp turned against the Ultimates. It’s revealed she was secretly working as a double agent, tasked with orchestrating Nick Fury’s failure. Interestingly, she’d already been training as a superhero before joining the team, guided by a well-known Avenger who was also responsible for killing the Ultimate Universe’s Nick Fury.
Which Ultimate Avengers character kills Nick Fury?
Just as Ultimate Nick Fury was about to arrest Wasp and Hank Pym, he froze. Suddenly, a hidden figure appeared, reaching through Fury’s head and taking out a device that functioned as his brain. Fury’s troops opened fire, but the bullets seemed to hit themselves, as the figure became ghostly and intangible. Wasp realized this figure was someone she’d been trained by – and the guiding force in her life – revealing him to be The Vision from the Ultimate Universe.
I’m completely fascinated by this new Vision! Ultimates #19 didn’t give us much about where he came from, but thinking about Nick Fury’s robotic brain, and how he fought against being controlled early on, makes me think there’s a real connection. It’s wild to consider, but what if this Vision is the real Nick Fury, his mind somehow transferred into a synthetic body? Or maybe Fury subconsciously created him! I have so many questions, but I’m confident we’ll get answers before the Ultimate Endgame wraps up.
Ultimates #19 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
