Marvel’s Other Spider-Man Has an Absolutely Unhinged New Enemy

Okay, so as a huge Spider-Man Noir fan, I have to say, he’s faced some pretty crazy bad guys, but this new villain? This one is on a whole other level of messed up. Seriously, it’s not even a competition – this is the most unhinged villain he’s ever gone up against.

A sneak peek at Marvel’s Spider-Man Noir #4 (from Erik Larsen, Andrea Broccardo, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Joe Sabino) shows Spider-Man gearing up to face a new villain: Cyrus Goop, also known as the Ghost-Hunter. Cyrus believes he’s fighting ghosts, but he’s actually targeting innocent people. It’s up to Spider-Man to stop the Ghost-Hunter before he accidentally turns ordinary citizens into real ghosts.

Okay, so the latest Spider-Man Noir comic, issue #4, is shaping up to be wild! I’m playing as Peter Parker, and I’m on a case involving a bunch of… well, let’s just say people are turning into dried-up husks all over town. Gwen Stacy is not thrilled with my investigation, but I’m getting closer to finding out what happened to her dad. And get this – she’s starting to figure out who’s under the mask! It’s a total mystery, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.

Cyrus Goop is the newest addition to the diverse world of Earth-90214. While this alternate universe might seem new, it actually debuted shortly before Spider-Man Noir, appearing in the 2008 comic X-Men Noir #1, created by Fred Van Lente, Dennis Calero, and Nate Piekos.

Earth-90214 is a universe where classic Marvel heroes and villains first appeared in the 1920s and 30s, instead of our present day. While it has its own version of teams like the X-Men, very few characters actually possess true superpowers – Spider-Man, Black Cat, and Daredevil are among the exceptions.

This version of Spider-Man, from Earth-90214, gained his powers not from a radioactive spider, but from an ancient spider-god. Unlike the main Spider-Man, this Peter Parker readily uses deadly force against his enemies, though he sometimes questions his actions afterward.

Fans are excited about the new live-action Spider-Noir series coming to Amazon, MGM Studios, and Sony Pictures Television later this year. The series will star Nicolas Cage, who also provides the voice for the character in the Spider-Verse animated movies.

Joining Nicolas Cage in Spider-Noir are Lamorne Morris as Robbie Robertson, Brendan Gleeson playing a New York City mob boss, Li Jun Li as a nightclub singer, and Abraham Popoola as a WWI veteran looking for work. Jack Huston, Lukas Haas, Karen Rodriguez, Cameron Britton, Whitney Rice, and Amanda Schull also star in the film, completing the main cast.

Spider-Man Noir #4 goes on sale January 7 from Marvel Comics.
