Although SHIELD continues to operate in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the comic book version of the agency has been inactive for almost ten years. Marvel recently announced that SHIELD will be reinstated following the ‘One World Under Doom’ storyline. A recent comic issue foreshadowed this return and also suggested SHIELD will be teaming up with a new group of heroes, separate from the Avengers.
Marvel first revealed plans for a new SHIELD in a press release back in November 2025. The announcement stated that Nick Fury would be rebuilding the organization within the Captain America comic series, leading up to a major summer event called Armageddon in 2026. However, a recent comic issue hinted that this new version of SHIELD might be quite different from the original.
Who is the new SHIELD trying to partner with?
A hint of the new SHIELD organization appears in Fantastic Four #6, written by Ryan North and illustrated by Humberto Ramos. Following their success in stopping an alien attack, the Fantastic Four reconnect with Maria Hill, the former director of SHIELD. She updates them on what happened during the ‘One World Under Doom’ storyline, where she fought alongside them, the Avengers, and the X-Men.
The Maria Hill from Earth-616 is quite different from the one seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She generally has a strained relationship with superheroes because she focuses on practical methods of maintaining order. In fact, she was working to rebuild SHIELD with the goal of monitoring and preparing for potential threats posed by superpowered individuals.
Recent developments led Hill to believe SHIELD would be more effective working alongside existing superheroes. She plans to restructure the organization, moving away from its traditional intelligence-gathering role and towards a model similar to the Fantastic Four’s Future Foundation. While still dedicated to improving the world, the new SHIELD will prioritize direct collaboration with the Fantastic Four and a revised approach to its mission.
By the end of Fantastic Four issue #6, the team hasn’t made a decision. They’ve collaborated with SHIELD before, and Sue Storm even worked as a full agent for them. However, they don’t really trust Maria Hill. There’s a chance Nick Fury could convince them to work together, though.
Fantastic Four #6 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
