
Fans are excited for both Insomniac Games’ upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine and a future Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. However, the last Spider-Man game received some criticism for its story and gameplay. The developers might be able to address those concerns by taking a similar approach to the upcoming Wolverine game.
Okay, so everyone was talking about the issues with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, but honestly, it was still amazing. It got a 90 on Metacritic, which says a lot! The big open world, the awesome fighting, and being able to switch between Peter and Miles? That made it a really special superhero game, better than a lot of others out there. Now, with Marvel’s Wolverine, it sounds like they’re addressing the few things that held Spider-Man 2 back. That’s awesome because if they can fix those things, we’re looking at a game that could be even better than an already fantastic experience.
Marvel’s Wolverine Seems To Show Off An Incredibly Grounded Hero For Its Combat

The main difference between Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel’s Spider-Man appears to be in their combat systems. While it might seem like the biggest change is simply the level of violence – Wolverine is rated M, allowing for more blood and gore – there’s more to it than that. Gameplay footage shows Wolverine brutally taking down enemies, even severing limbs, which is a stark contrast to Spider-Man’s approach of web-slinging and incapacitating foes.
Wolverine’s fighting style, shaped by his mutant abilities, was always distinct from Spider-Man’s. However, the realistic, close-quarters combat Logan employs shares similarities with the first Marvel’s Spider-Man game. In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, both Peter and Miles showcased their individual strengths through unique gadgets and powers—Miles with his electric abilities and Peter with skills enhanced by the symbiote.
In the first Spider-Man game, they really held back on letting you use all of Peter’s cool web gadgets – you unlocked most of them as you progressed through the story. But in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it felt like they just threw tech and powers at you for doing side missions, which was awesome but also meant I could become super powerful really quickly. It was all about big, explosive fights. Now, with Marvel’s Wolverine, it sounds like they’re going for a more realistic and gritty combat experience, a big shift from the over-the-top action of the Spider-Man sequel.
Gadgets And Symbiote Powers In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Had Its Pros & Cons

As I leveled up in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, fighting changed for me. I stopped focusing so much on perfectly timing counters and stringing together basic combos. Instead, I found myself holding onto my most powerful abilities, waiting for them to recharge. Then, I’d unleash them on groups of enemies for massive damage! These abilities were so strong they could often wipe out weaker foes with a single hit, even before I landed a single punch or kick. It was way more about big, flashy moves than skillful hand-to-hand combat.
With all the new spider-themed tools and abilities, the close-quarters combat from the original Marvel’s Spider-Man felt less important in most fights. While the combat system was well-designed and worked well against large groups of enemies, it shifted the focus from the first game. Both Marvel’s Spider-Man and the Miles Morales game limited extra powers, either by making them a one-time special move or by requiring a long recharge time.
The combat in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 changed for a number of reasons, partly because the bosses were more powerful than those in the first game. Villains like Mr. Negative, Kraven the Hunter, and Venom demanded stronger abilities, but these changes also meant players didn’t need to be as creative in fights. They relied less on using the environment or carefully managing their resources to win.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 Should Be A Return To Form For Both Peter Parker & Miles Morales

While some players liked the new abilities in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the more realistic combat system could offer better long-term fun in a future game. Similar to how Marvel’s Wolverine focuses on brutal, close-up fighting to fit Logan’s character, Spider-Man thrives as a fast, agile hero with amazing reflexes. Relying too much on special powers and gadgets against weaker enemies diminishes the exciting feeling of being Spider-Man that made the first game so enjoyable.
The benefits of Marvel’s Wolverine extend beyond just the fighting. Compared to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which sometimes feels overly cautious with its dialogue, Wolverine promises a more raw and outspoken Logan. A future Spider-Man 3 could also benefit from a more mature or complex story, as long as it still retains the lovable characters and world that fans enjoy.
Honestly, everyone’s loving the look of Marvel’s Wolverine because it feels like a real departure from the Spider-Man games. It seems like the developers are going back to what made their first superhero game so good, and really getting what makes Wolverine’s story connect with fans. If they can keep that up, I think Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 could seriously be the best one yet.
